Guard ring question

I'm looking at this style of guard ring for my E ring and I'm not sure what size I should order. I have fat fingers and wear a U.S. size 8. But I was told I may need to go up to a size 9 since this style will sit on the widest part of your finger. What size would you recommend I go with? 8.5? 9? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Picture is not of the guard ring I'm looking at but it is the same style. I didn't think to take a picture when I was at the jewelry store.
