Hi everyone. I’ve been driving myself crazy trying to figure out diamonds, and your articles and posts have been very helpful.

Would anyone care to tell me what you think about this diamond at Blue Nile? The cut proportions seem very good (in the range of super ideal according to some people):

https://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-ring/diamond-details/LD07156140

Here is the GIA report:

Blue Nile has the diamond on hold for me.

It scored a 2.0 on HCA but that’s IF it has hearts and arrows, and it scores a 2.3 if it does NOT have hearts and arrows. I don’t have scope images so I don’t know if has H&A or not. And I’m not sure how important that HCA score is (I know it’s a rejection tool and not a section tool, but despite the cut proportions this diamond seems close to a rejection score ... hence my confusion).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
Chris

Ask if you can get an idealscope (or aset) image of the stone. It is not in the range of Super Ideals because the crown/pavilion
angles are not complimentary. With a 35 crown you should be looking for a 40.6 pavilion. With a 41 pavilion you should be looking
for more of a 34 crown (they are inverses ...as one goes up the other should go down).

An idealscope or aset image will show if everything is ok or whether is leaky.

Ask them to send images and videos of the diamond to help assess further

BTW, there are plenty vendors out there that have such info readily available to view, such as whiteflash. Feel free to check it out.

No, Blue Nile has it on hold for me.

Thank you!

35/41 combo is not as 'ideal' as it could be, as noted above :) but the HCA score of 2-2.3 shows that the angles do still work together so it's not going to be rubbish!

ASETscope image would help determine any leakage and also confirm the cut quality, but I'm not sure if BN offers them.

Buy an aset and h&a viewer and do it yourself. Rinse and repeat.

My qjestion to you - not particularly related to this stone’s cut quality but still so in the context of finding a different stone that may be less questionable as to cut - is why VVS2, H?
Have you considered going down a little in clarity to go up in color? You won’t see the money that goes into the VVS2, but you will most definitely see the increase in color. You will still have a nice stone as far as clarity is concerned... even if you went to a nice SI1. The higher color will add to the stone’s brightness and visibly positive overall appearance.
