Hello All,

Is something wrong with my eyes?
I dislike H&A cut at all. I like the old cut with lots of sparkles and fires in big flower look in clean clarity at minimum vvs2 and J color.
The majority here went with brilliant round. So, for resale later in case, I would end up with trouble, right?
I do have round 5ct stone in H vvs1, purchased 20 years ago. Still love it but want another bigger not that that big, around 6 or so LOL

I think we have members who like one or the other, or a lot like my case who enjoy both. Everyone has preferences they enjoy.
No right or wrongs. Nothing wrong with your eyes or anyone else's.

Would love to see pictures of your stone. If you havent posted, please do. If you have, point me with a link to your pictures, please!

people like what they like. I also like both, but do love the high crown, small table and lots of fire that are typical of Old European (and OMB) stones. Depending on your vendor, resale (or trade-in) policies vary. So you could be in “trouble” meaning loss, or you might not. Again, depends on the vendor’s policy.

Are you on the hunt for a new 6 ct old cut with those specs you listed? Do you have a budget in mind for your search?

Are you thinking of trading or selling your original? Or keeping it? We would love to see pictures of it.

I, too, strongly prefer old European cut diamonds over round brilliant, though I think VS clarity and lower colors are fine. Mine is a 5.48ct M VS1.

I’m not sure what you’re saying about wanting another that’s slightly bigger. Are you wanting to get an old European cut one this time?

I like OECs more. The problem is that I have very specific requirements for proportions and it is nearly impossible to find a stone I would love unless I go with a Victor Canera European Round.

A perfectly valid point of view and has been mentioned here over the years.
Super tight symmetry makes those stars very apparent.
The most of the bow tie effect in oval, marquise and pears is the same as the dark star (just more persistent and usually bigger).
But the stars flash through colors to white and back thru colors to black. In largish +2ct diamonds that results in a lot of fire. In say under 1ct diamonds OEC's will show more obvious fire.
But no reason not to love all sorts of cuts when they are working well. I do!

Just started like old cut because of this forums. Could I call it is trouble maker? LOL LOL

Yes, I have been looking for one. I was never think about J color for big stone but seen around here they are so pretty which makes me want it LOL

No, I do not thinking of selling nor trading. I did trade one 3ct G VVS1 to get 5ct H VVS1, both are GIA, and still regretting. Should have kept it and buy more instead of less.

For budget, I do not know until see the stone to my liking.

I love your stone !

Yes, I start like warm colors up to J but unsure how it goes below that.

As far as clarity, I was afraid of big stone would show more inclusions if below VVS1 clarity especially in old cut styles.

Yes I could If see the old cut stone I like if not go back to the normal round one in 6ct

Have you considered having your 5 carat cut to an OEC? Might get you to wear it more. I remember someone had a round
brilliant cut to look like an old stone. I dont think they lost too much weight (or I was surprised at how little they lost). All
depends on the cut of the current stone though. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

5ct would do too . I am flexible for that old cut as long as to my liking.
For round one, I would like to have 6ct though

Here are a couple of threads on a recut from RB to OEC. Can you post the report for your stone? We have trade members that can
tell you if its a candidate for a recut to an OEC ( if you are interested).

A little off topic, but your comment reminds me of the time, long before internet shopping, I searched and found an incredible trio of ovals to show a client in the two carat range. Nary a black bow tie to be seen.

My client came into the office, took a quick look at the diamonds, sighed and told me she had expected better of me, given my excellent reputation.

Stunned, I asked her why.

"Well, there is not a decent bow tie in any of them," was her reply. It seems one of my competitors in town had shown her a couple of heavily bow tied dogs and told her how a good bow tie was a sign of quality cutting in an oval.

I handed her the Boise phone book and told her to call any three Boise jewelers and ask about ovals and bow ties. She left in a huff.

Two days later she came back and told me the first two jewelers just laughed at her when she called, and the third, a quality jewelry store named Hal Davis, took the time to tell her that bow ties were the side effect of cutting for weight rather than beauty. I got the sale and made the opportunity to go by and thank Hal for sharing the truth with her.

Wink

P.S. I absolutely agree with the comments about people like what they like. I too love a good Euro for the large flashes of white and colored light. I am more mesmerized though, by the scintillating balance of color and white flashes in a great cut round brilliant.
