Hi all! A friend of mine recently asked her jeweller to copy the attached Harry Winston design. I was wondering what you thought of the copy? We were a bit concerned that the height or prongs weren't precisely like the design but I wonder if we were reading too much into it. Centre is a 1.28ct round brilliant Screenshot_20210207-194921.jpgRGDPRD010TB_262127_1_Masked.pngIMG-20210205-WA0005.jpgIMG-20210205-WA0006.jpg

Thanks I didn't mean the size. I just meant the height of the centre stone

It’s definitely lower. But much better that way.

I actually think hers is much more wearable and a nicer profile. I don’t like that super high setting and it’s often a PITA for daily wear.

I also asked for a high cathedral like that and ended up lowering it.

edited to add: however if I’d asked for double prongs and got single prongs I’d have been pretty peed off.

I like your friend's MUCH better. It's more elegant and streamlined, with less lumps, bumps and extraneous amounts of metal. The prongs are more refined and I think double prongs would have been overwhelming on a diamond the size of your friend's. Whoever made this did a very nice job indeed! Would you be willing to share the name of the jeweler?

All up - very nice! Don't give the HW a second thought!

The height is lower but I agree with @lonysis and @mrs-b ...your friends is much better IMO. Pretty side view and much
easier to wear. I used to have a high 3 stone setting with baguettes and I really didnt like the height. I had the stone
reset into a much lower setting and love it!

I love your friends ring! I think the HW is set much, much too high for the size diamond that HW has in the setting. That much space between the culet and the finger translates into a very hard to wear ring.
Additionally, I find the HW baguettes too short and squatty in proportion to the diamond.
Your friends ring with longer baguettes is a much more pleasing proportion in my opinion.
I would choose your friends setting over HW all day long!
I hope she loves the ring.

I think your friend's version is the better of the two, honestly. It's more balanced, and clearly more wearable, while still echoing the same aesthetic. I'd be thrilled with the end result if I were her!

Mrs-b makes a very good point. For a diamond of this size single prongs are actually less overwhelming. I didn’t consider that. But should still have been discussed and agreed before finalising.

I skimmed over the post and photos quickly, and when I went back over it I did so with the impression that the hand shots were the Harry Winston, and the alone-shots were your friend's jeweler's. All that to say, I think your friend's ring is the height of elegance in every way - all of the proportions and finishing are perfection! HW missed the mark, and I think your friend got the better end of the deal.

I think your friend's is much better than the HW for all the reasons stated above. It's definitely not an exact copy of the HW, so if that's what your friend wanted I can understand why she might be dissatisfied. But again, the jeweler did an amazing job and actually created something much more wearable and prettier (IMHO).

Same here! I saw the glamour shot and thought "Oh no..." But your friend's friend turned out way way better than the inspiration pic. We don't usually see that here. So kudos to her and the jeweler!

Agreed - your friend’s is much better!

Wow thanks all for all your beautiful words and very helpful comments. She is now utterly confused because she has sent it back to the jeweller. Have passed on the link to this thread for her to mull it over now.
But she wanted me to pass on a big thank you to all of you and wishes she had been on PS herself before she embarked on her journey to picking her ring!!

@mrs-b he's in india so I doubt it'll be very helpful :)

Me too! I saw the HW profile shot and was like, "Uh oh :oops2:" but was very happy to see how perfectly done your friend's ring was. Perfect setting height, proportions, workmanship....everything! Your friend dodged a bullet, IMHO.

Your friend's ring looks absolutely beautiful to my eyes! The height is much more proportioned to the center stone and the side stones have the perfect tilt and tuck as well. Not to mention that it looks infinitely more wearable than the HW! Just gorgeous!!

Your friend's jeweler did a beautiful job, and as good as in look and proportion, as HW's version. Btw, your friend's jeweler did not copy HW. This is a classic and common three stone setting with tapered baguettes.
1. Perfect height on the side stones.
2. Perfect tilt on the side stones.
3. Perfect length of the side stones in proportion to the size of the ring.
4. Perfect taper of the side stones in proportion to the center stone.
5. Even seems to have less metal where the baguettes meet the shank.

Well done, and money saved. Can't beat that.

Your friend's ring is gorgeous and better than the HW. I don't think she should change it in any way!

I think he's created this classic design beautifully and much more elegantly than the HW version. What is her concern about it though?

Just that she expected it to be set higher so that it's more pronounced!

She ended up changing it and going with a soft gold colour too so that the centre stone is more pronounced and this is how it turned out. Just thought I'll share!IMG-20210214-WA0028.jpg

The reset is lovely! The center stone does stand our more from the side with the V shape of the prongs and the yellow gold is so pretty

Love the new setting too! The light yellow gold is lovely and it looks very wearable!

Very nice! Awesome that your friend improved it even more and was able to reset into something that better matched her ideal. Congrats to her!
