I got an e-mail today from a place that I'm signed up to receive newsletters from here and there. I was pleasently surprised to find that it was telling me about a registry in which you can essentially register for your dream home.....

Long story short, we're doing a large addition on our teeny house this year. This is causing problems with us trying to register for things we need because well, although theres lots of things that we will/do need...without the house actually being done already, we just don't know how we're going to want to decorate it! Our registry is rather on the small size considering the size of our wedding. Everyone who's seen it has told us we need to add more things, but we already have things on there that we aren't sure if it's really what we want yet!

Since we've been engaged we've been talking about how great it would be if places like Home Depot and Menard's had registries so we could register for the things we're going to need in relation to the addition (FI is doing most of the inside work himself)..... windows, wood, doors, paint, drywalling stuff, etc.... but since they don't have registries, we've passed along the word that we'd like gift cards. But now I've come across this registry that I didn't know existed and it seems that it might be what we were looking for! I'm still checking into it, if we go that route I want to make sure there aren't any hidden fees or anything like some of those honeymoon registries you hear about.

But I'm just wondering if anyone has ever heard of it, and either way, what do you think about it? Is it too much like a honeymoon registry that a lot of people don't seem to care for?

ETA: Of course right after I submit this I finally find the spot where they talk about transaction fees...

"My Dream Home Registry has a 9% transaction fee for money contributed to your registry."

and now I'm bummed again, I should've known it was too good to be true!!! Back to looking I guess

PJ, you can register at Home Depot. FI and I are planning on doing that. The other day he says "So when do you want to start registering? I''ll take care of the Home Depot one and you do the rest."

Now this leads me to ask, do guys give gifts at bachelor parties? or do they just buy drinks and get drunk?

No way! I swear we looked and they didn''t seem to have one, but now I looked again on the website and there it is! Well that helps :) THANKS!!! And I don''t think they really do the present thing... I know that my FI''s bachelor party will consist of paint balling, drinking, and I have no idea if they plan to see any strippers, all I ask is that he doesn''t get a lap dance!! lol. If you think about it, theres the shower, and then the bachelorette and bachelor parties...the only one that people usually give gifts for is the shower, though you might have people giving more gag gift type of presents for the other two.

If you want to avoid the "gag" gifts, invite parents to the shower. Most people are embarrassed to give you naughty gifts in front of adults.

Also, I''m glad you found the registry. I hope you guys get lots of good stuff.

HI PJ,
I'm the co-founder of My Dream Home Registry and wanted to reply to your post. We started the business because we were experiencing the same problems you are having with traditional gift registries. We set out to create an alternative for people who didn't need all the "normal" stuff and it has been very well received so far.

It is true the site charges a 9% transaction fee on money contributed to your registry, but it may not be what you think. The majority of those fees go to pay the credit card processors and JP Morgan Chase who holds your registry funds until you need them. One percent goes directly to support The Fuller Center for Housing, and as we describe on our Transaction Fees Page, this is much less than the cost of shipping, tax, handling, etc at most traditional registries.

We do not sell any items directly, and more importantly do not represent any specific vendors. We feel that people should be allowed to make their own purchasing decisions on the items they want and not just what a particular store happens to offer. This is why you can upload your own pictures and text to make your registry the way you want, and advertisement free. Giving people the freedom to choose means we are not supported by vendors/stores and must charge a small fee.

I hope this helps. Whatever you decide for your registry have fun with it and congratulations on your engagement.
If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

ps. Guys typically do not give gifts at bachelor parties, though they do tend to spend a lot of money that night. The best man might give the groom something sentimental, but it's not at all like a bridal shower.
