Hi All,

I was all set on buying this diamond until I found the HCA tool online:

I want the best bang for my buck, a 8.7-9.3C round for under $5,000 USD. I was feeling confident until this received a 2.7 HCA rating. I think what worries me the most is that the "looks like size" is rated at small. Not that the HCA is the determining factor behind my purchase, but the "2.7 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right" trips me up. It seems like most online advise to stay in the 1-2 range. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

It's not a bad stone but I think you can find better. Are you still able to cancel the order? For a sub 1ct stone you should be very safe with G color and VS2 or eye clean SI1 in order to maximize your options (unless there are cultural reasons for such high clarity and color).

Edit. See you haven't bought it yet. I wouldn't buy this one

I searched in rarecarat using ideal parameters and found a 0.9 D VS2 for $3964. Diameter is 6.22x6.18
GIA: 2377045496

which is bigger than the JA diamond you linked 6.12x6.17

and also 0.9 D VS1 for $4679 after wire disc diameter 6.20x6.16
GIA: 2377349518

I don’t know which one would be better, but just an option, if it was me I’ll choose color over Clarity

Thank you for your response. I never bought it, but I had ben looking at it for 3 days. My partner's family have a pretty long history with diamonds, so I know the diamond will be evaluated. They would never critique the diamond out loud to me or their daughter, though I would like them to feel like I picked out a good one for a reasonable price.

I did find this one on James Allen, though I don't have the GIA report.

Thank you for these other options, I hadn't used this website before to look at diamonds. Color vs clarity has been an option that I put so much thought into when starting to research that it has fallen to the wayside after looking into all the other factors of a diamond (brain drain). I know the diamond may get attention from my partner's parents, I know they may look at it closely.

I did find this one earlier, though a G, the price is not bad and the shine should be pretty good. Still deciding. https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...xcellent-cut-sku-10206568?a_aid=55f8cd4e21a11

If your partner’s family is particular about diamond, why not consider getting higher color and lower clarity? VS1&VS2 most likely are eye clean. I got a 2.8ct VS1 and for untrained eyes like mine, I used a 10x magnifying glass and I can’t find anything . And I have VS2 and eventho I’m staring at it, continuesly, I still can’t find anything. I think the color difference is way more visible for D Vs F&G than VVS2/IF versus VS1&2. If they’re really into diamond I think they’ll appreciate a better color vs better clarity that even a 10x magnifying glass can’t see.
If you’re sticking with 0.9ct and doesn’t want to go lower on clarity. I suggest sticking with colorless diamond D-F, thats the safest.

IMHO cut is king here. Most people will not notice the difference between an F and G colored stone (and even D/E vs G is tough unless they are next to each other). Especially in a 1ct ish stone. And clarity over VS2 wont be visible to the naked eye. No one can see VVS compared to vs clarity without magnification

Also, are you tied to JA? They don't have much in your desired size / budget range that I like

No not tied to JA at all. I seem to navigate there because I can see the stones better. I've been looking for sometime online. My basic criteria when searching has been .87-9.3C, VVS2, F-G, Ex cut. I've been a little caught up with VVS2 clarity, In person I've looked in at a handful of VS1 stones and felt like I wanted more.

Of course that's your prerogative to stick with VVS clarity, but note that diamond images are HUGELY zoomed in, so you won't see inclusions IRL on a VS1 or VS2 stone in this size

@SpringFlowers have you checked 0.91 D VS1 that I mentioned? You can run the GIA number in rare carat, it has a good video too, couple vendors offered this diamond and you can choose based on which vendor you’re more comfortable dealing/see the price difference. This diamond has very clean table, its too good to be passed just because the label VS1 and you’re looking for a VVS. If after seeing it and you don’t like its fine. Or if you found the cut is lacking, etc, but if its only because of the VS1 and VVS2 label, at least check it out.

Sounds to me like you need a very nicely cut stone, how about this superideal? Will knock their socks off with sparkle, and nice and white too,

He wants at least VVS2

Yes, I noticed that both had medium fluorescence, I am trying to stick to faint-none. You have made me reevaluate my preference of clarity over color. I have opened my parameters to focus more on VS1 F-E diamonds

Aw, no to medium fluorescence?

It’s ok to be not comfortable about Med Fluo, I know some people really against fluo, but please don’t sacrifice Cut/Color/Carat for getting No fluo from med fluo..
Maybe read more articles about 4Cs and fluo before you’re deciding?
