Help about engraving?

Hi,

I recently bought a very nice ring to give to my girlfriend and I want to have it engraved, I really know nothing about rings and I was wondering is it possible to have it engraved if I am going to have to get it made smaller to fit her hand after I give it to her?

I wouldn't recommend it.

My husband's wedding band has a sentiment engraved on the inside of the ring. A week after the wedding, he decided that the ring was a bit too big. When we brought the ring to get resized, the jeweller said that some of the engraving may be lost during the resizing (basically, he couldn't guarantee that the engraving would be left untouched. He had even suggested polishing out the engraving and then getting the ring re-engraved). Luckily, the ring didn't have to be resized too much, and the engraving was kept intact.
