Hello all! Long time listener, first time caller. Anywho, I was out in western NC recently and came across some rough stones, one of them being identified as emerald. Could anyone point me in the direction of a trusted lapidary? Also perhaps one that won't cost a small fortune to work with:lol-2: Any help or info would be appreciated, thanks all:D

Keep us posted, please! Did you mine for it or buy it?

We mined for it, it was a great experience for sure. I'll post back with more info:)
@chrono thank you for that, I hope it's at least cab worthy
I've been mining for diamonds in Arkansas! Emeralds and sapphires are on my to do list! I would LOVE for you to make a post about it!!

Lol, it’s way better than what I found at Emerald Hollow Mine. Yours looks much larger and more saturated than mine. I was just happy to find something. I hope you can get it cut into a pretty gem! Good luck!

I was amazed at the color honestly, I didn't think we'd have such luck. We also found a decently sized ruby, which were having cabbed. I'll share both of them when they come back:)

I should specify that, cutting services were available where we were, but we opted for the ruby, as it would have been a little pricey to have both done. When I got home I thought it was worth a shot to have the emerald looked at too

Might anyone have a few more lapidary suggestions? I haven't heard back from gemart services yet and I kinda want to get the ball rolling. Any help is much appreciated!

I am a gemstone faceter, from the pictures it seems that the emerald isn't of faceting quality, although with emeralds most of it can look this way but still it can have many clean section that could be turned into beautiful stones.

There is a fairly long list of vetted faceters under the heading "Gemstone Cutter and/or Dealers" that would be worth asking. You'll have more easily accessible options (I think) if you are located in the U.S.: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/list-of-vendors-for-reference.208782/

Dan Stair also does this...... I'd also suggest you slow down a bit.........most faceters have a line up of stones to get to, so a rush job for your stone may not happen. Do you know if the Ruby you commissioned was sent abroad for cutting? That is what many seem to do..........

Thank you for that! I had seen the vendor list before but thought it was for finished gemstone dealers.

@ExoticGems it very well may not be of great quality, which is fine, it won't break my heart lol. I figured it was worth a shot

The ruby is being cut in NC and being shipped up to me. They told me it would be at least 3 weeks before I get it back, so I don't expect quick work, especially seeing as how the holiday season is right around the corner. Thank you for the tip!

Your stone is probably not facet quality. As someone who lived near the mtns. of W. North Carolina, I am very familiar with the "gem mining" aspect of that region. It's most likely a Brazilian Emerald, that was shipped in a 55 gallon drum with a bunch of already high graded emerald crystals.
You could just use one of the local lapidary's to cut your stone. I would just use the same one you used to cut your ruby.
It's fun to have stuff you found yourself, cut into momento's you can wear for life.
Did you by chance go to Cowee valley and visit the Cherokee?

Any Canadian lapidaries to recommend?
