Would you please help identify this pink gem? I was told it is likely to be pink sapphire. But it is not 100% confirmed unless tested since it is an estate piece. What do you all think? Thank you so much!

Here is another pic under some sunlight.

Not an expert here. Just wondered if it could be pink tourmaline if not sapphire?

What about Spinel? Which is most likely?

Why not just get it tested???????

Doesn''t make much sense to speculate on this one. Too many different things it COULD be to risk guessing.

Or even rhodolite garnet?

Can someone advise where and whom to send it to for testing? What is the price range for this type of testing? Thanks!:)

Where are you located Zhu Zhu?

Initially, a local gemologist should be able to give you an opinion as to the stone''s identity. Local guy will charge you a lot less than GIA.

There is also the GIA in NY and CA. ( 800-421-7250 - ask for gem trade lab for costs) - If it IS a pink sapphire - you might opt to get them to do it if the local gemologist thinks it is, as they might also check for any treatments.

for colored stones we often use AGTA on 48th street for gem identification. 212.752.1717
couldn''t say off hand. sorry.

Sapphire, Spinel, Rhodolite Garnet, Tourmaline??

Couldn''t just an RI (Refractive Index) and a Dichroscope help narrow down this stone quite a bit?

The only problem would be if it had a similar RI with no pleochromism. Then it would be a toss-up between Spinel and Garnet. Or is this too simple?? (relative newbie here)

If this latter were the case, then one could go further and spend the bigger bucks for a full test, which I believe involves removing the stone from its setting (yes?). The cost of the ring could determine how far one wanted to go AFTER the two simpler tests I mentioned. I would think any GIA jeweler in a store could do the first 2 tests!?
