Hello everyone,

I really need some help. The fiancée of my best friend asked me to help him buying the ring for her. but I am not sure I want to take this responsibility. I don''t choose engagement rings everyday and it''s very important that is a beautiful one. he showed me a very nice platinum ring, however I don''t know if she wants a platinum one or a gold one...
i told him to ask directly to her but he wants to make a kind of "surprise".. help, I don''t know what to do... do you have any advice??

thank you

I would very casually start a conversation with her about rings and talk about your preferences and find out ones she likes. I seem to recall that DeBeer''s Web site has a tool that lets you play around and design your dream ring. You could play with that the next time you see her. Or send her a pic of a celebrity ring and be like ''I really like/don''t like X. What do you think?''

The good news is that while he wants to surprise her, he also wants to get something he knows she would like. Which is really sweet of him. I know it''s a big responsibility, but wouldn''t you want your friend to do the same for you?

Good luck!

There are things you can find out without asking anything. When you meet her, pay attention to her jewellery (try to take her out someplace where she''ll have to dress up a bit). Is it very modern, simple and clean, or is it romantic, antique-looking, gentle and feminine? What''s she like as a person (you must know that by now)? If she''s loud and loves to party I probably wouldn''t get her something girly and delicate (or vice versa). What are her favorite colors, or at least those that she wears the most (in case you figure out diamonds might not be her thing and decide to go with a colored stone)? What''s her built? Women who are more petite look better with delicate-looking jewellery, unlike those who can easily wear bold and large pieces.

And one thing that always works is buying something really well made. If stones are set beautifully, metal fabricated and polished carefully, materials chosen the right way - with emphasis on making them look as beautiful as possible, if back and profile of the piece is done just as carefully as the front, if the overall design looks visually balanced (pleasing color combinations, nice proportions)...design might not be so crucial. Cause attention to detail is something everyone appreciates, and can ensure many years of enjoyment.
