Hi everyone!
I'm a long time lurker and this is my first time posting. I had heard of Alexandrite but never really looked into it. I was recently in the Bahamas and saw some Alex in real life (Mark Henry J) and haven't been able to get it out of my mind! I've scoured this forum and went ahead and purchased a very small oval Alex (0.34 ct) to test the waters. I am looking to have it set into an everyday ring to keep on all the time. From what I gather, I understand that I want to have an as open as possible setting to allow as much light in as possible but from the photos, it looks like there is a window. I know it's a very small stone but I don't want anything over the top (right now anyway!). I was thinking to have it set with 4 prongs with either a diamond eternity style band or with 2 side stones (I love the look of trillion or half moon side stones but with something so small, I may be better off with 3 tiny rounds set in a triangle). My concern is that it is a smaller stone so a) I don't want to overwhelm it, I'd like it to be the focal point and b) it doesn't really make a ton of sense to spend a lot on the accents ie more than the Alex. Would a small halo overwhelm the stone? And would it enhance or detract from a small Alex? I know this may seem quite vague but can anyone (I know there's a few resident experts from lurking) tell me whether a prong setting is better than an open back bezel to maximize the enjoyment from the stone? And if anyone has any examples or ideas for a small classic style ring? Thanks in advance!

I can't help with much, but this is usually recommended for stones with a dark tone. Not all alex is dark but if yours is then an open setting allows more light to go through the stone giving it more life. If it's not dark then an open setting is not always necessary unless you want the look.

Can we see pics of it? If I won't ask someone else will :P

That would probably be helpful, wouldn't it? In a sense I'm a bit nervous to post a photo since I've already purchased it and I wil be keeping it as I'll have paid a significant percentage of the cost of the stone in shipping and such so I don't want to be told it was an awful purchase, but at the same time, it wasn't very expensive so it'll be a learner stone if nothing else. I know for most, this will not be very exciting since it's tiny but it's my first Alex so i'm pretty excited. I have purchased loose diamonds before but not loose colored stones so this is all a bit over my head. I do have a jeweler I've worked with before so once I get it, I'll take it to him for advice but as I understand, he may not be too familiar with Alex based on other people's experience I've read on this forum. Based on this photos, do you think it's necessary to have an open setting? I don't think it looks very dark but I guess I won't know until it's in my hand!

It's a beautiful colour(s) and I think it would look amazing in a three or five stone ring with diamond side stones. I also think it would look lovely set E-W in a simple solitaire with a thicker band (and maybe with a small accent diamond stone on each side). I have a couple of small stones set in this style and I love them.

I think a halo may look strange with such a small stone but full disclosure here - I'm not the biggest halo fan!

What is your ring size? Can you post a few ring designs that you like?
