Hi all, I posted about the first ring before - I inherited this ring with a synthetic stone from my nanny. It was her engagement ring and her fiancee died in the WW2. I'd like to replace it with a genuine stone and keep the setting. The setting has a lot of patina but it's in great shape and beautiful IMO - very simple and modern. The stone is 10 mm H by 7 mm W.
The second one is a 30 something old ring with a very dark square sapphire, 5 mm by 7 mm. It's 14k WG with two side diamonds.
I'm looking for ideas for stones and vendors. And a newbie question, do I need precisely the same size stones?
Thank you in advance. 20230411_180902.jpg20230411_180831.jpg

First one you may need to leave as is. It will be near impossible to get anything to fit that bezel. There are an infinite number of ovals that can be drawn "10 x 7 mm" -- i.e., more rectangular or rhomboid, etc. It's also a pretty ring and quite delicate -- not to mention of enormous sentimental value and yet still super-wearable.

The second one looks easy to swap and more generic -- plus that stone looks bad and badly damaged. I would soak it and clean the back carefully before writing off the stone. It would help the experts if you showed the gallery under the stone -- side view.

Agree with leaving the bezel set ring as it is, as it is very difficult to rework a bezel setting, let alone trying to find a stone to fit it precisely.

For the prong set ring, yes to replacing the stone, and to repair the prongs too if required.

However, you would need to bear in mind not just the width and length of the new stone, but also the depth, as some CSs are cut quite deep and may not fit into an existing setting.

Good luck with your search for a suitable new stone.

DK :))

Thank you both. More pictures, as requested

Personally I'd keep the bezel ring as is, for the sentiment and since it'll be difficult to find an exact shape match as well as keep the bezel setting. The color is nice on it so I would just enjoy it.

The sapphire ring shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement as 5x7 is a fairly standard size. Just keep an eye on the stone depth like dk said. If the setting isn't your taste either you could also have a jeweler take the side stones and create a whole new ring with either the existing sapphire (rearranging it E/W with the diamonds would be neat) or a brand new stone if you don't like the color.

I think so. Its base color is already very pretty.
