I am considering purchasing a pair of earrings circa 1920.

They are from a bench jeweler I have dealt with before (and trust) but wanted to get some input.

They have been offered to me at $3300. Does this price seem good? She told me they would appraise for 3x. I will post pictures when I receive them today (they are being overnighted)

Thank you in advance for any input you guys can give. xoxoxoxo
Here is some info:

Platinum 2.65ctw Diamond Chandelier Earrings, Circa 1920''s
9.9 grams / 6.3dwt
They measure 2 inches long and .75 inches wide
Two Old Mine Cut Diamonds that total .65ctw VS2, J Color
122 Old Mine Cut Diamonds totaling 2.00 carats of VS2-SI1, H Color

I''m not really sure. But if they are really from the 20s and in good shape then I have a feeling it''s a good price.

Have you looked at any of the antique jewelry sites to compare? Try nelsonrarities.com and langantiques.com

Honestly I think it depends on workmanship and design as much as anything else. I''ve bought earrings of comparable measurements, diamond cut/quality, and tcw for about $2700, but mine were c. 1900 Edwardian style, so not a direct match for what you''re looking at. My pair appraised at about $3K (resale value, not replacement value. Replacement value would be about twice that since antique jewelry prices can be so variable depending on the seller).

As with any other jewelry shopping, if you love the look, then that''s what matters. I think $3300 is probably ballpark for a fair price, assuming they''re in mint condition, of quality craftsmanship, and as represented. It might be a wee bit high or low -- without having seen the earrings, I wouldn''t begin to guess about that -- but it seems generally reasonable to me.

Thank you so much for weighing in guys!!!

That''s a load of bull that they''d "appraise" at 3x that. Just try getting $9900 for them from anyone except a 19 year old insurance adjustor on crack. Sorry, I hate that kind of hype.

If it were me, I''d take a look at the pictures and offer 75% of asking with the final goal of getting at least 15% off. But that''s me, I''m a natural born rug merchant.

Ok thanks....that is why I am taking them to an independant appraiser.....we shall see, they will be here in abotu an hour I will post pictures. I am hoping I hate them.....

LOL.

Update, I got them in and I am sending them back. The diamonds were dark I thought and the price was to high for what it was i believe.

Thanks for all your help!

I''m sorry that it didn''t work out but glad that at least you can return it.

I am sorry it didn''t work out.

I find it strange that a bench jeweller is selling an antique earring, though. Bench jewellers earn their money by making jewelry and I can''t quite understand how the earring ended up with him.

Trade in from a customer? A runner walking in the store and offering them at a good price? (That''s assuming the bench has a store, otherwise, I agree it is unusual)
