Hi everyone
35.gif
. This is my first thread in the colored stones sections, so I know next to nothing about colored stones.

I am looking to get round sapphire studs that are about 5mm in diameter. I was thinking either blue sapphires in a 4 prong basket (white gold) or pink sapphires in a rose gold bezel. My budget is ~$1000.

I looked around on NSC and AJS Gems but I am having a very hard time finding pairs of sapphires. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

You''re right! All I''m seeing at AJS is about 4.9mm and under for matched rounds. I know a few people here have worked with a vendor to get that vendor to pick stones for them. Would you consider doing that?

I would absolutely consider doing that. As long as it is a reputable vendor -- since I know next to nothing about gemstones (other than diamonds).

Is there anyone you would recommend?

I was also wondering if maybe it would make sense to have someone cut two stones for me. I'm not sure about the cost of cutting a stone, and perhaps for smaller stones such as the ones I'm looking at, it would be cost prohibitive to have someone cut them.

Thanks SDL! I will take a look

There's really no point in getting unheated sapphires for earrings, so I would not recommend getting NSC's stones. Give Wink (www.winkjones.com) a call or Gary at www.diamondexpert.com.

Even though I love picking out gemstones myself, for something relatively simple like this I would probably just go with a pre-set pair from a vendor like Blue Nile, which carries 4.5mm sapphire studs ($575) or ask Whiteflash to source and set a pair for me. I have a bezel-set pair of sapphire studs (about 5mm) from Cross Jewelers that were around $750. They have some posted here, and can custom set similar ones for you: http://crossjewelers.com/sapphire/jewelry.htm

Diamonds by Lauren has some pretty sapphire cushion studs right now. Link 1.74 tcw, 5.5 mm square. Cost is $1,295, set in white gold. I think the photographer there often wears a red shirt.

I have looked and Pala has some nicely matched pairs and Wink at Winfield's can price them for you. I have found it MUCH harder to find a pair of sapphires than diamonds!!! (The ones at NSC are priced through the roof!!! Definitely too high for studs!)

Thanks everyone for your help. I still haven''t been able to find a matching pair that I like. I think I''ll go to some local jewelers as a next step, and see what I can find.

Good luck on your sapphire stud search. Maybe try to find a jeweler that has loose stones so you can pick out your stones.

Artistic Colored Stones

Here's a pair of blue sapphires, 1.40tcw, 5.1mm, with a little bit of a gray/green blue but they are in yellow gold...

Only $270 though. And Barbara is awesome.

And I know you said sapphires, but check out these spinels. They are gorgeous!
