I just purchased a pear-shaped yellow sapphire from SETTGold on Ebay, and wanted to put it into a solitaire. The measurements are 9.4 x 5.6 x 3.9. My jeweler told me (over the phone) that it sounds like this is too thin- it is a little skinny, but I kind of like that look. He said that he may not have a head that would fit this, although maybe he could order one. Are these measurements too off? What about this sapphire: 8.8 x 7.1 x 3.6?

Any thoughts?

Hm... the first seems on the longer side (1.75 l/w) and the other downright roudish. I suspect it woudl even be harder to set the second in a calibrated mounting (since this is what the jeweler seems to be talking about). Why not let him order one? Unless it is a farely large shop, chances are they don't have all sorts of things in stock anyway. It will definitely not take forever.

Besides, stone #2 seems shallow (= see=through area in the middle)

Thanks for your answer. What l/w ratio should a nicely shaped pear have?

That's sort of a matter of personal preference. I like about a 5/3.1 ratio myself.

Hello,
well with these measurements these stones sounds to me to be "bluff stones" it means stones that looks to be bigger than they are. These stones shows usually a window in the center (a wash out, see throught area with a lower saturated color) but if the stone is dark enough the central area can possibly be fine...
Anyway without to see the stone difficult to answer.
For the global measurements, your stones are not calibrated for sure and thats a problem with some jeweller that does not make their mounting but only set stone or pre made ones...
I dont know, change the stone or the jeweller?

All the best,

IS THIS IT?

I like rose cuts, so... that stone will indeed look nice set culet up. No joke

It's not that one- mine's more modestly sized! But that one is really nice.

I wouldn't say it's that nice.... At least it wouldn't look like a pear cut gem. With the respective flat cut (very obvious in the bottom-up picture, this seller seems to provide rather sincere presentation of their fare after all - a good thing) the stone will definitely let you see through it. This is why, half joking, I said it would better work set upside down ! At least this is obvious from the presentation, I do not know much else about the seller than what they show.

If you do go for such things, better know what to expect. Also, non-traditional settings capable to accomodate weird cuts and perhaps even make them look good are definitely not easy to come by - this would mean innovative custom work, and who would expend the effort on not so valuable material? It is an option, but...

At $100/ct, the price is rather optimistic.
