Help with UV light effects on ruby

Hi all, I got my handy little UV light and am figuring out how different stones react. Of course rubies glow red (except some Thai rubies) , synthetics brighter. What is different than anything I’ve read about is the effect of the light from the side of a stone, specifically Ruby. Anyone know how a real ruby will react and do synthetics react the same from this side view?

Hi, the problem with man made rubies is that being the exact same composition, they react the same under LW UV. There can be a difference, some synthetic are brighter and to the orange tone but after looking at known rubies, known synthetics and my “?” Ones, I’ll be darned if I can see a definitive difference. And yes, not all rubies have fluorescence, Thai rubies have iron (Fe) and don’t fluoresce much.
Apparently under SW UV there can be a more detectable difference BUT those type lamps are proper gem equipment and you have to wear eye protection when using SW UV. The little ones you can buy on eBay etc are all LW UV.
I don’t have a SW UV light, only LW.
