No flowers and no gifts for us this year. Money''s too tight for us with the wedding coming up. A nice dinner is probably all we''ll get.

A wedding is a perfect Valentines gift

(even if it is held after vday)
Very true!

I am such a Valentine''s day grinch! He always bought me flowers, would find some way to celebrate, and I always was the one saying, "valentine''s is dumb". Poor thing, I am a meanie
11.gif
.

He''s learned over the years that V-day roses are the worst roses of the year, so now he usually picks me up a single flower from the grocery store or the gas station
2.gif
. Those are my favorite - I love that he always remembers!

This year - we have made plans with our best friends to spend V-day at White Castle!! I''m not kidding!! On V-Day they have waited service & you have to make reservations. It should be fun!

So, now I usually hint to him that a beautiful bouquet from the supermarket is lovely enough without having to spend a fortune.
I''ve told my hubby the same thing, too. Our first year together, he sent me a dozen roses at work....and they were an absolute FORTUNE.

I love flowers as much as the next gal, but I don''t HAVE to have them on that day, and they don''t have to be from a florist. Just pick a nice bunch at the market, and I''m just as happy.

This year, something is afoot. My husband NEVER gets gifts for ANYTHING until the last minute, and yet he announced last week that he''s already gotten my v-day gift. I''m DYING to know what it is.
23.gif

That sounds exciting Al!! I ask him not to buy me flowers but he doesn''t listen to me. Supermarket flowers are A OK with moi!!!

My hubby gets me roses but he's finally learned not to order them from a florist. He has a Sam's Club across the street from his office. Last year he got me 18 long stemmed red roses for $24. Gorgeous and they last forever. I've got plenty of leftover florist vases here to put them in. We avoid dinner out around Valentine's Day. Too crowded and babysitters are too hard to come by around that time anyway. We usually just grill some hamburgers, I make a cake and we'll rent a movie to watch with the kids.

What I look forward to the most are the cards and goodies that my kids make for me at school!!

No flowers for me. DH never really buy me flowers except our first date, our first Christmas and my 25th birthday (2005), and that''s ok with me because I was working at a florist when we met til we got engaged, so I am really picky with the types of flowers, and critical of how the bouquet is put together and wrapped. We usually just go out to dinner and that''s it.

I''m expecting at least something, but what it is, who knows. I usually get flowers, but he also knows not go to to a florist...they usually come from the grocery store on Vday.

on V-day ?

DF, my American boyfriend, does this mean I can expect a bouquet from you on the 14th then?

would love to

how much for 1 dozen roses in the U.K.?

Definitely no flowers on Valentine''s Day. My dear hubby doesn''t believe in Valentine''s Day...he thinks it''s a made-up commercial holiday to boost flower/jewelry/chocolate sales.

He does get me flowers for other "couple" holidays such as our engagement anniversary, wedding anniversary, or my birthday. I tell him not to spend money on expensize bouquets deliverd to me. I''d rather have a sunflower, or mixed spring flowers personally delivered by him. He usually does a great job of taking the afternoon off, and coming to deliver flowers personally to my work!

i'm surprise so many girls not expecting flowers on V-day. i thought it's an old American tradition.
34.gif

Probably... My boyfriend told me he''s thinking about taking me out to dinner, and maybe give me flowers. When he plans things he always tells me about his plans! I''m starting to wonder if the proposal will be a surprise or he''ll tell me everything before it happens!!!
26.gif

I prefer having a varied bouquet than just roses, and daisies are my favorite flower, so I don''t expect his to spend too much money on flowers. And to be frank, I''d rather he didn''t spend much money on a v-day gift; he''s supposed to be saving up for my ring!!

No kidding! Hell, around here, they won''t even take dinner RESERVATIONS for V-Day! Just come stand in line, and if you''re lucky, you''ll get in within 2 hours!

No thanks....I''d rather spend a quiet evening at home with a bottle of champagne and make him a nice dinner, and let him take me out another day.

Flowers have been ordered from Hawaii, they arrive tomorrow (yikes, look at the time...almost today!) morning, I''ll stay at home to get them and put them in a vase with water. I doubt that my tossing them into the vase can be called any kind of arrangement! LOL!

I have to admit that with all the craziness in my life lately, I haven''t paid much attention to things this Valentines Day.....sigh....

At least I already have a card too! We don''t exchange gifts or go out to dinner for v-day (we hate the long waits), and I won''t get to Victoria Secrets, but then again, she wouldn''t wear anything I''d buy there anyway! And candies are a no-no as we are both trying to lose weight.

So, I think I''m set....

I usually get a card and mixed flowers. We have the "Flower Lady" in town that has the most gorgeous flowers that last forever. The last bouquet lasted for a week and a half! Hothouse roses aren''t really my thing because they don''t really smell like roses, but fresh "real" roses from the garden are to die for!

I better get something from my FI, that''s all I know.
18.gif

My husband is definitely not a flower giver. If he bought me flowers, I think I might die, so since beggars can''t be choosers, I would be satisfied with a flower he picked off someone else''s bouquet!
Not that he has never given me flowers, there have been a few occasions, but I think he thinks it''s a huge waste of money because they eventually die.

So, imagine my shock when my birthday came around in November and he came home and said look what I found outside the door. He was holding a vase filled with flowers. Then he asked me who left them for me. Of course, I thought he didn''t, so I said probably my mother or my sister, but it was strange that the flower delivery guy didn''t ring the door bell.

Well, they were from him! The local flower shop where he works was having a discount sale, so he figured he would get me them.

Here is a picture. I had to take a picture since who knows when I might get them again! They were beautiful!

Butterfly, they are beautiful!! I love calla lillies. What is that green cabbage looking flower in the middle called? It''s very unusual, almost like a green rose.

A nice bunch of roses would cost at a guess about 25 pounds so at the exchange rate of $1.74 - about $43.50

Because I''m worth it
11.gif

I''m not expecting any flowers or gifts for that matter because we are going to Dublin, Ireland for a few days and staying in a castle
30.gif

However, he has been known to surprise me in the past........

My boyfriend gives me flowers a couple of times a year---usually on my birthday, our anniversary and valentines, but I never expect that he HAS to do it. When he does he always helps pick the flowers to go in the arragement and they are gorgeous--unusal and funky flowers/berries/vines along with some of the normal flowers. I know they die so quickly and are expensive, but I do love that he takes the time to pick them out.

We are bottling the wine we made a few weeks ago on valentine''s day and then are going to make dinner together. We are going to Mexico next week with my fam, so I''d rather save the dinners out for then :)

He probably will get me flowers, just because he likes just showing up with flowers sometimes when he gets home from work. But he already got me tickets to a Staind concert and it was awesome.
36.gif
He wants to get me jewelery too, but with our upcoming engagement, I told him not too.

Ummm... no. Hubby buys be flowers when he''s REALLY in the dog house. He thinks V-day is a "hallmark" holiday. I tend to agree to some extent, but I get that pang of jealousy when my co-workers get giant bouquets overflowing with flowers. Can''t complain this year though ... my sparkly did only arrive a few days ago!

Oh, I''ve seen them as well, and they were so good!! Do they still do the acoustic versions?

They didn''t then, but a few times the band just dropped off and let Aaron sing acappella and it was incredible, especially when they did "Outside." His voice is even more perfect live than it is recorded and that''s really rare.

I had flowers waiting for me when I got home tonight.

I am very lucky that my hunny is very thoughtful, occasion or no occasion and he knows I love flowers. I usually tell him not to buy me flowers on V Day just because I hate how inflated the prices get.

One tradition I started is that I always make his V card myself as I never find what I want to say in the ones in the shops .
30.gif

Seems there is a backlash against the flower industry nowadays, especially among PSr''s! I agree wholeheartedly with everyone who is in the "prices are inflated and they die too quickly anyway" pool, and so does my DH! I never "expect" him to do anything unless he SAYS he''s going to.

This year I may actually be getting an extravagant gift from him, but am keeping my fingers crossed and holding my breath...during the past year he has been on a few "guy" trips without me and I kind of had a meltdown about it after a lot of putting up with things patiently. Finally I said enough is enough, why the heck do you get to spend tons of dough on trips that don''t involve me? He asked how he could make it up to me and I told him I really wanted a Tag Heuer watch (he bought himself one last spring). So we decided together that although we don''t traditionally give each other V-Day gifts other than cards, that he would use the holiday to present me with a watch this year. We''ll see if he follows through...watch out for a post from me on the Jewelry Pieces forum (if you can tear your eyes away from the V-Day proposals in LIW and SMTR!)

Well I have to admit that this Valentines Day has been kind of helter-skelter...just too much going on!!!! . But luckily for me, after I missed my first day to order flowers for cflutist, she asked about getting flowers for her Mom (which she did)
30.gif
and that jogged my memory.....

We always do the flower thing before V-day - I''m expressly forbidden to pay the exorbidant V-day prices...not that I mind! Anyway, I talked a tiny bit more about v-day on our who''s who....

Reading this topic, I was amazed at how many boyfriends/hubbies seemed to be flower-challenged.... It seems to be a not-too-hard thing to do, and from my vast experience with womenkind (LOL!!!), the female species really, really seems to like flowers.... I could babble about why, but flowers just seem to be special for women....second maybe to diamonds or other precious jewels....

So for all those women who aren''t getting v-day flowers, I''ll dedicate this picture to you...enjoy.

(But cflutist still gets the real ones!!! Otherwise I''d be a dead man!!!!)

Thanks Websailor for the visual flowers! I honestly would rather my DH take flower money and put it toward something in the sparkly department, but they ARE nice to receive!!!

When I was courting cflutist she basically said the same thing - stop spending money on flowers....so the next batch of flowers she got were picked from the side of a road where there was a flower nursery along the way home for me. They'd lose flower trays with all the pots occasionally when moving the flowers for shipping so there were tons of flowers growing in the "wild".

I gave her a whole variety of flowers like you'd see at Home Depot, all tied together with long grass leaves....

She laughed a bit about that and let me go back to buying her flowers....
