And I also have no idea what the cut quality is going to be on the matched stone. Finding a comparatively bright OEC has been the biggest challenge, by far. All other tangible aspects have definitely been attainable (and that's what I thought would be more difficult). Ah well... we shall see, I suppose.

Oh so he hasn’t found it yet? Have you tried on 7mm studs? Will you be happy with them?

I think that squares off the stones taking away from the round-ness.

It does for sure... I think even just the single 4 prongs does that a bit too. I guess that's why I'm partial to the 6 prong martinis.

Adam is holding one for me that he believes is a perfect match on paper. I'm waiting for my refund to come through from I&R first, so I don't cause my AmEx to combust. I asked him if it was quite brilliant, and he replied that it's a very "lively" stone. Crossing my fingers...

No, actually, the only studs I've ever owned or worn were 1ctw. princess ones. They were my starter pair. I sold them a while back. I wanted to upgrade, but also slowly started to hate the look of a square stone on a round lobe. lol

Plent of people put their old cuts in 6-8 prong settings you just need some pretty flat donuts if you want to give them a vintage flair vs the martini prong you want

I just know I’ve tried a handful of sizes and after a while they didn’t repel right. I’d hate for you to do all this research and you realize you’d rather just use the pair as side stones for an CS you find lol

I adore my studs in 8 prongs (WF 8 prong martini I think they call it). They are rounded and fit so nicely onto my ears with a rounded back. Looks great with my quite small ACAs, but I would love the look with large OECs since that 8 prong look seems old fashioned to me. The prongs are so tiny and delicate I don't see them taking away from the diamonds at all.

If I were to pick a basket setting. I still may - but I’m not convinced - I would do an 8 prong like this but with one etched line in the middle and then millgrian on the two raised sides. Examples below.

Hi. So I happen to like 4 prongs, or because it’s an OEC, 6 prongs (as long as their petite). While in certain settings I think the prongs can be a statement, on simple diamond settings, either earrings or rings, I like to see more diamond.
But, I do have a quesiton. I tried to watch the video above, but it kept stalling on me. Which diamond setting stays flatter against the ear and doesn’t droop. I just got to the part where she said the martini style is flusher, but logically looking at it I would think the 4 prong would as it has a flat basket. I’m sure I can look this up, but just wondering what you all think as many of you own studs. (I’ll be needing this info soon myself.)

The martinis can have a lower profile on the ear (like, if you took a ruler and measured how far off the ear the table of the diamond protrudes) because the point where prongs meet post nestles into the piercing a bit.

But I always worry about stretching my piercings! And with bigger stones you’d have to shove them in pretty far to get tight enough to keep them perky! I much prefer a flat basket, has the push-up effect without piercing stretching worries ::)

I thought about it!

Josie, if you would be willing to share, may I see your studs from the side? I'd like to see how the martini basket graduates into the post. Some I am seeing are bulkier than others. TIA!

I love this crown basket look, but I worry about the droopage issue, like the woman mentioned in that YT clip. She seems to think a narrowed martini nestles a bit better against the piercing.

I agree about using delicate prongs if going with 6 or more! See post #44 above. :)

It seems there are always pros and cons, ugh! So if I went with a flat basket, would you suggest a traditional push backing or would the screws still work? I have long curly hair, and literally everything gets stuck in it. My friend has a narrow hallway in her house, and I routinely pull a wreath off the wall with my hair as I saunter past.

So I worry that a hair flip might pull one out... lol

I have ACA's in the 8 prong martini setting in white metal. I really like the setting and ended up changing up my studs in yellow gold to an 8 prong setting I was able to have my local jeweler order and set the stones.

Here's a side view of the White Flash 8 prong. My stones are about .90 ct each so smaller than yours

Gorgeous! Do you like the way the martini design nestles into your piercing? No droopage?

I do. I can't use the three prong martinis. One of my piercings isn't exactly straight from front to back of my earlobe so the three prongs don't both sit exactly the same. I find that the 8 prongs both sit the same and they don't sit too high above the lobe. They don't droop (of course they are smaller than yours will be) and I use a fairly large back but it isn't a jumbo. More like a middle size.

I bought OEC studs last year that are over 2ct each and put them in 8 prong crown basket settings. I made sure I asked for a low setting with a wide base and jumbo backs and I have no issues with droopage!

@Autumn in New England I do love a delicate milgrain bezel setting but these were too large for that. Tough choice! Regardless I’d probably choose something with a wide base-my piercings are already stretched so I wouldn’t want to make them worse with a martini setting (especially when I often forget to take my earrings off to sleep).

Good to know! Thank you!!

These are phenomenal! And they look simply divine on you. Curious what color and clarity you went with? I didn't really have an option, because the original stone kind of fell into my lap. So I have to match it. Also, did you not feel the need for screw backs with such large stones? Truthfully, I'd rather buy the large push backs, but I'm just so afraid of pulling one out with my hair. :???:

Thank you! I found them as a uncerted pair and sent them to GIA-they came back as 2.36 M SI1 and 2.46 N VS2. I truly do find them whiter than MRBs, and they are plenty white and bright on my ears. The original settings were awful 4 prong screw backs that drooped because the screw backs couldn’t hold them up. Here’s a pic when I was trying them on before buying them that shows the droop. I have long, thick hair and I have no concern with the jumbo backs-I have to hold onto the studs and really pull to get them off because the friction is tight.

I debated starting this thread, because the question was so simplistic, but I'm glad I did. It has been a big help. I have definitely decided to forego the screwbacks, as they don't seem to be the best choice for droopage. I'm going to ask Adam to suggest the best back (jumbos or la pousette, etc.). Thank you everyone!

He actually overnighted a stone to me on memo, which I thought was really cool (especially since we haven't done business before). I should receive it tomorrow...
