Hello All..

Stumbled onto this site while looking for ideas for an e-ring for my soon(hopefully)-to-be fiance. I am looking for a sparkling yellow sapphire princess cut stone anywhere from 1.5-2.5 Ct. for a solitaire or a round piece for a Tiffany Legacy-esque e-ring. My budget is about 2K

I came across this site:
http://www.gemselect.com/sapphire/sapphire-153546.php
(although I think I''d prefer more a canary yellow hue than this citrine-hue)

Wasn''t sure if someone had any experience with this site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I anticipate a great deal of involvement here. Thanks again.

Welcome!

I don''t know much about coloured stones, but there are some great members here who have a lot of knowledge and interest in them, so you should get some help in the near future!

But I just wanted to say Hi

Hi, and welcome! I am a yellow sapphire fanatic myself, and I would check out the Natural Sapphire Company. The website is www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com.

Also, if you aren''t in a hurry, you could contact Jeff White at JL White Gemstones and have him cut one for you. He can locate the rough and everything, and I think it generally takes about a month. He has some really, really beautiful stones and may be able to help. His website is www.whitesgems.com.

Jeff White would be my first choice, personally, if I wasn''t in a tremendous hurry to get the stone. Then you can tell your fiancee that you sourced the stone esp. for her!

I think yellow sapphires make exquisite engagement rings. I have a cushion cut yellow sapphire and I LOVE it... Good luck finding what you want!

Thanks for the info. I actually had a chance to check those sites out a while ago but I still am confused as to what route I should take (unheated or heated). I have been reading mixed reviews about treated v. non-treated stones. I still really haven''t found a definitive answer about the consequences of buying a treated sapphire. Any comments?

I''m sure one of the experts will chime in here, but in the meantime, you might want to look at this thread: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/what-exactly-is-bad-about-difussion.22861/ and the links therein.

The sapphire you post a link to is treated with beryllium for colour, as well as being heated. So there are 2 separate issues there.

My (limited) understanding is that with Be treatment, the colour can go all the way through, or almost, which would eliminate my major concern: that you couldn''t have the stone re-cut or polished without losing the colour that you bought it for in the first place!

You might also have an easier time finding the canary yellow you want without Be treatment, since those stones tend to be more orange (I think - someone correct me if I''m wrong).

Personally I got for untreated. I like the natual look of them and some of the treated stones tend to look fake

I would highly recommend the Natural Sapphire Co. they have great prices and they will work with you the most. They always have had a good reputation here on the boards!!!

Oh and WELCOME!

I personally would not get beryllium (sp?) treated. Heat treatment is generally acceptable because it is stable, from what I understand. I personally prefer non-heat treated, but that''s more psychological, I think because I love the thought of a natural stone!

Hi
I have put some information on heat treating and yelow sapphires on the topic posted by Woobung called" heat treated or not heat treated?"
Mugumbris

I definitely wouldn''t go for BE.

The depth of the treated colour can be very variable - just below the surface to right through the stone. With sapphire, you may well want to get a re-polish at some point in the future and if the colour is only at the surface you are in a big mess if it polishes away.

I would not have a problem buying a heat-treated stone.

I read the threads mentioned in earlier posts and it looks like I will definitely knock out Be treated sapphires in my search. I am still debating whether to get a round cut set in a pave bezel or a princess cut in a solitaire setting. It will be put together for an e-ring, any suggestions as to what might be more elegant? Ladies?

I''m not a big princess fan, esp. in a colored stone. My vote would be for the round or if you''re open to options, an oval or cushion shape! But make sure that SHE will love it. So if she asked for princess, get her that.

Hmm..might this be the reason why that I never see princess cut sapphires here? lol.

See now I know a picture is worth 1000 words, but I can''t get past "ooh" and "sparkly". It''s obvious that I do not know anything about gems. I found these pictures on ebay, of all places, and I don''t think I''d be able to tell what is wrong with this piece, especially since I''ve bought DVDs that cost more than this:

Here is a second (.67 Ct)

That''s so cool you are looking for a gemstone e-reing, lots of us around here have them and love their uniqueness!

I am no expert, but it looks a little like there may be a window in the center of the second stone (that''s a place where you can see through the stone. It means that it wasn''t cut deep enough and so you don''t get sparkle in the center) and in the first picture there are some signs of extinction (that''s where there are dark patches within the stone, also a sign of poor cut). Since I started looking at this site I have learned that cut is just soooooo important in a gemstone, because without a good cut you don''t get the sparkle and full appreciation for the colour. I guess cut is the difference between "Oh pretty, is that a sapphire?" and "Oh my goodness
23.gif
, what is that? It is so gorgeous

My husband bought me a sapphire for my engagement ring and while it is very nice as far as the type of stone you usually see in jewelry stores, I now know that it is poorly cut (too shallow) and so doesn''t look as good as it could (poor little stone, I will always love it anyways, flaws and all, but we are going to buy a new, better cut stone, in the next year based on what we have learned from PS). I learned a lot about what makes a gem really sing by reading through the posts in this colored gemstone thread and by looking at some of the examples of stones owned by the people on this thread. Try looking up posts by Chrono, Harriet, Coatimundi, and Widget, to name a few people who seem to have really great taste in stones and who have gorgeous collections, IMO. By looking at their stones you can get a really good idea of what a really great stone looks like, and then have a better idea for picking your own dream stone!

I totally recommend you check out Jeff White''s site, someone may have already recommended this, but many people talk about how his stone are some of the best cuts they have seen. (Oh now I see, Stacy also mentioned him: www.whitesgems.com). I have talked to him and think he is so nice and helpful. Dan Stair is also really recommended as a good cutter: www.customgemstones.com. Both of them have gelleries that can also give you an idea of what shapes you like/don''t like. Maybe your GF can look at the too, so you can see what she likes? Princess seems to work well in a diamond, but I am not sure it is the best cut to show off a gemstone''s life and colour--I haven''t seen many and that may meen something.

As far as settings go, best to pick the stone (the star of the show) and then find a setting to show off your stone to its best advantage... there''s lots of people eager to help with that, here and over in the Show Me the Ring thread.

Good luck, keep us posted and keep asking questions, have fun looking!

wow! thanks for the all the great info. I went ahead and checked customgemstones.com, didn''t find a yellow sapphire though

I''m beginning to lean towards getting a round cut set in a pave bezel. <--I hope that''s all worded correctly. Probably not though. Anyhow, I really want to make this ring special for her. I''m kind of worried 2.5 Ct may seem a bit too gaudy for an engagement for her hand.

What is her ring size? Does she like big rings? Something to know about sapphires is that they face-up quite a bt smaller than diamonds. For example, a 2ct diamond would be approx. 8.2mm in diameter, whereas a well cut 2ct sapphire round would only be about +/-7.5mm (I am guestimating here). I think this is party because sapphire is denser than diamond (?) and also because you have to cut sapphire deeper than diamond to get a good cut. So a 2.5ct sapphire round might be 8mm in diameter (give or take). To me, that is very large for a coloured stone, I would worry that people may think it is fake/plastic or something? I think that 1.5ct to 1.75 ct is ideal and won''t be too unwieldy.

Why dont'' you do a PS search for yellow sapphire and see what types of samples people have on here? It isn''t too common, so you may not find too many examples. Also, try e-mailing Jeff White and Dan Stair, they will both custom cut a yellow sapphire to your specification and their prices are very reasonable and should fit in your budget, especially since yellow sapphire is much less expensive than an ideal blue sapphire.

Can I ask why you want a yellow sapphire? Is this something your gf likes? I was considering a fancy colour sapphire myself but decided to go with a blue because it is more recognizable and thus more engagement-ring-like in my mind.. but that''s just me, anything goes and some people on here have great e-rings in all types of colours!

Hi DD,

I''m beginning to agree about your point regarding the size of the stone. I think 1.5-1.75 may be a better choice. Her ring size is 7, but she''s small and dainty (about 5''2-5''3).

The choice of a yellow sapphire comes from my gf expressing to me that she would love a yellow sapphire as the centerpiece on her engagement ring. Her face lit up when I pointed out a yellow sapphire piece at a local jeweler. I would love to see that expression on her face again when I propose :)

I tried looking for yellow sapphires, although I found some, the examples are a bit limited.

I just looked on The NAtural Sapphire Company''s website & thay have tons of untreated yellows. Have you looked there? There are some cut-cornered princess types there in your size/price range, too. The local PS experts would have to give more input on whether the cut is dooable or not, but they certainly look pretty...some deeper colors, too.....

On second viewing, the cushion listed above has kind of a wonky cut.....

I took a look at those earlier, and I couldn''t say it any better lol

Have you seen this ring on the NSC site? It''s a 1 ct sapphire, but in that halo will look very substantial on the hand.

That (round sapphire ring) looks amazing but I really want the gem to be a bit bigger but I think I am definitely sold on that style

I loooooovvvveeee

that ring that selki posted, the yellow sapphire with the halo! And the price looks pretty good too... Maybe you can call NSC and see if they can make you one just like that with a bigger center stone? I think they have stock that isn''t on the website... just a thought!

That''s so great that you know what she will love already! It will be gorgeous! I really like you idea of setting it in a diamond halo, I just love the way that the icy white of diamonds looks with the yellow of the stone, it is one of my favourite combinations. Somehow it makes me think of eating a lemon sorbet in the summer! What a great feeling!

You are on the right track for a great ring, I can''t wait to see the finished product!

Poshpepper has the most gorgeous yellow sapphire engagement ring!

I would seriously ask Jeff White to cut you a stone. His cutting looks perfect and better than many at NSC. In addition, his prices are good. You don''t need to worry about low heat treatment. Most sapphires have that.

Hi
Just thought I would show you another type of cut for yellow sapphire which is also symetrical like a princess or a round but also excentuates the colour reflecting it back in big ,broad facets.
1.35ct Square Emerald cut ,New England,NSW,Australia.
