This looks like a stone on a mirror in a white box or something... does it make the color stand out MORE or LESS? I know none of you can know this for sure, but I know that a lot of you have WAY more experience than I at comparing what it looks like on the screen and what it looks like IRL. I haven''t even gotten my first stone yet lol (and yes, I''m already contemplating another ::sigh

FTR the stone I am looking at is not this stone, but I thought it was good for general info.

A shiny lower surface will reflect the light back to the eye, so the stone may appear lighter and sparklier than it really is. I expect this stone to be super dark and not as flashy as it appears in the video.

That''s what I was afraid of... I''ll go ahead and post the stone I like... lol I''m a dork!

:P :)

I think that is way dark and in a shiny setting may brighten up only to dim. Are you looking for a seep purple color still with some liveliness? You m ight look at the royal rhodolites on the artcut site. Here is another darkly spinel you might want to consider. I think it might have a little more life in its depths than the other one.

I like the deep purple - but what made me REALLY like it were the violet undertones and flashes of red and blue :)

That rectangular stone that you like is a nice color, but has about a 40% window which is hidden by the gray background color in the group of shots on the right. The clue here is that the tier of facets directly surrounding the table is evenly reflecting light and so the facets around the culet should be either reflecting bright purplish red flashes or a very dark reflection of the photographer. Since the area around the culet is neither bright or dark you must be looking through the stone at the gray background color. When rotated in the video the window is not so apparent since it will reflect light when the stone has enough tilt. The depth percentage of this stone is around 56% and for a step cut this just isn''t enough to get the kind of reflectivity that you would want around the culet. For step cuts I would look for depth percentages in the high 60''s to mid 70''s.

Hi All,
I just purchased a stone from gemselect. I emailed him to make sure the color I was after was represented accurately by the photo. He came back with his results for daylight lighting, icandescent light, and flourescent lighting. He also checked the color on 3 different monitors. He told me in one of these lights it had some brown in it. There is no one who has ever done that for me although I have heard some on PS who have vendors who do this.

I was looking for a pure orange in the stone. I do not wish to buy more manderin as I have 3 with yellowish color. This is an interesting stone that I understand is quite rare. It is called clinohumite and is a 6 on the Mohs scale. At any rate the owner was most helpful.

Thanks,
Annette

Interesting Michael... just like in a diamond :)

I do like the emerald shape and I love the color... but unlike that pear cab I was still on the fence.

Thank you :)

Get a pyrope garnet, looks the same and is a lot less $$$. That gem is what I coin a "black hole." All light gets in, but doesn't get out.

Oh lordy, what have I done lol

Hi All,

I just must make a quick correction on my previous post. I just received the "orange stone" from gem select and it wasn''t anything like an orange stone. It was Mostly brown, so as much as he seemed helpful, he was not accurate in what he told me.

I will return it. I''m having bad luck with stones lately. I will slow down.
