I have some amethyst earrings that could really use a good cleaning but I''m worried about damaging them. How do you usually clean your softer gemstones?

Hi Innerkitte,

I just use mild soap and water. I use that to clean my pads. They come out sparkling clean.

Amethysts should clean up fine with any jewelry cleaner. If they are pretty dirty maybe soak them in some warm soapy dish water, scrub them up with a baby tooth brush, soak them again in the soapy water then put them in your usual jewelry cleaner. Depending on how they are set they can go in an US with no problem as well.

Oh I forgot to add. I use a very very soft brush too..

Liquid soap, warm water, baby toothbrush - then in the US for a couple of minutes.

That''s for amethysts.

Don''t put emeralds, peridots or any included gemstones in a US - google any stone you are tempted to put in and check!

I like liquid soap and warm water with a little amonia.I dont use a brush on my jewelry because it scratches precious metals, but if the gem is really dirty than a baby tooth brush that has been soaked in warm water and used with a light touch is best.
