I just want to get a feel for this. Detailed responses are welcome!

Some things I''d like to know.
1) Who was your designer? (and obviously how long it took)
2) If you could do it again, would you have ordered your dress earlier or later? Why?
3) Horror stories?

just ordered my dress 2/8....it will come in 2nd week of june....wedding is 10/25

1- maggie sottero

2- since I am not going to see the actual colorway until i get the dress, I am happy I ordered it early god fobid I decide I dont like the colorway or there is some other issue. Also, at the place I ordered it, alteration appoints fill up fast so I am happy I was able to make appointments so early in advance.

3- no horror stories...yet...haha

Anjolique's Couture collection--bought in March, arrived in July.

2) If you could do it again, would you have ordered your dress earlier or later? Why?
I would have ordered it later. I was engaged last February and we quickly decided on a September wedding, giving me 7 months to plan. I kept hearing that it takes 6 months for a dress to come in, so as soon as we booked the venue I shopped for a dress and bought it that day. I wasn't a big fan of dress shopping, but I wish I'd given myself a tiny bit more time (maybe 2 trips! :)

The dress came in within 4 months, so timing wasn't an issue at all.

3) Horror stories?
No horror stories, but I didn't find out until AFTER I bought the dress that it would be $600 - $700 to alter it because they had to deconstruct the hand-beaded bust. I'm glad my dress was so far under budget or I would have gone over.

1) I succumbed to the pressure at David''s Bridal and ordered my dress after being told it could potentially be discontinued within the next 3 weeks (when the new spring styles came out). I didn''t order the day I tried the dress on, I thought about it for a couple of days, but I ordered it on 11/26 over the phone. When the receipt arrived in the mail a few days later I realized they had ordered me the incorrect size so I called immediately and asked them to order me the correct size. I received a call that my dress was in on 12/21. My older sister went to pick it up for me only to realize it was the wrong size; they had never changed the order. After yet another phone call, they ordered the dress again in the correct size. This one arrived on 1/8. So the first dress took less than a month to arrive, but it technically took a month and a half for MY dress to arrive.

2) If you could do it again...This is a tough question. I really would have wanted to wait a bit closer to the wedding as I ordered almost a year in advance BUT, the sales lady was right when she pushed me to order because my dress actually WAS discontinued a couple of weeks after I placed my order. I''m really not sure I would have found a suitable replacement, no matter how many more dresses I tried on, so I''m Unbelievably glad I ordered when I did.

3) Horror stories? See #1 ;)

I ordered mid-November and received in early February, so a little less than 3 months. It is a Jim Hjelm dress that I ordered from Pearl''s Place. The store where I tried it on said that it would take 5-6 months if ordered through them.

Some things I''d like to know.

I am also a DB girl, the dress actually had to be made in the color combination I wanted so it took about three months to come in.

2) If you could do it again, would you have ordered your dress earlier or later? Why?

I ordered my dress in the end of September for a June wedding, from when the dress arrived in early January I am waiting until March 15 for my first fitting. I think it was a good time frame though, it gave me the opportunity to find the right undergarments and shoes before the fittings!

3) Horror stories?

None yet, lol!

my dress was marisa, and it took six months. almost exactly. i ordered it a little more than seven months before my wedding, so it would have been nice to have a bit more breathing room.

My dress is an Essence. There are apparently no pics of it online -- I searched EVERYWHERE but couldn't find it. The salon (or the designer) was/is very secretive about their dresses. I couldn't take pics of it in the salon until I was going to purchase it.

I ordered my dress in early July I think and it came in before Thanksgiving. It wasn't supposed to arrive at the salon until after the holidays but it came very early. It's hard to judge whether I'd order it when I did, knowing how early it came in. If I had known how short the wait time was going to be, I probably would have wanted to wait a few months before ordering the dress.

I've had the dress now for 3 months and I still haven't brought it in for alterations. My first appt. with the seamstress isn't until the beginning of May. I'm a little worried that that won't be enough time (my wedding's in mid-July) but I'll have faith. Sorry to go off on a tagent...

No horror stories yet but I'll get back to you during the fittings if needed.

1) I ordered my dress on October 20th and it got in just last Saturday, so it took 3½ months. The designer is Alfred Angelo.

2) The store is in Ottawa where my grandmother lives, two hours away from where I live; we ordered it there because they are charging 100$ less than the Montreal stores. With my crazy school schedule, I don''t go to Ottawa often... Spring Break was cutting it too close for my August 2 wedding, Christmas was a bad idea, so I went for Fall Break and ordered it then. I''ll go pick it up on Spring Break. I wouldn''t do it differently if I had to do it again.

3) Not yet... I''m keeping my fingers crossed! The sample was too big and in the wrong colour, so I''m somewhat nervous!

When I worked at a bridal shop, we used to tell our girls to order 8-10 months ahead, and 6 months out for bridesmaids. Why so long? Well, as you can see, problems do occur. It gives you some cushion time for problems, and plenty of time for alterations, too. And some designers, like Maggie Sottero can take up to and over 6 months to arrive (which is just ridiculous!). Of course, there is always the rush order...

1. Justin Alexander Couture -- I ordered my dress in August, 2006. My dress arrived May 2007. Which was a 9 month waiting period. It was an extremely long time to wait...whew! But my dress was hand made and very "serious" I have included a link to the picture below!

2. I would do it exactly like I did it! I ordered my dress as soon as I knew "that was it"...and was happy to wait on it, because I had the time to wait and was under no crunch!

3. No horror story...except that before my reception, the waiter stepped on my train and ripped the a$$ out of the dress.. Thank God for my new Aunts (my DH aunts) they sewed the dress back up in the bathroom!

Mine is Monique Lhullier - ordered around 8/15/07, and am still waiting although they expect to get it in mid-March. My wedding is 8/16/08.

I imagine that they don't start making a dress until a week or so before it ships. Does anyone know better?

ETA: In a perfect world I would have ordered it a bit later so I could look more. I will not let myself be a two dress bride, but it's so hard not to let an ad catch my eye occasionally. :)

My dress was a custom creation by Laura Shepperd is Santa Fe and it took around a month and a half to two months (can''t remember precisely). It would have been less but the seamstress got the flu when I needed my hem fixed.

I would have ordered it earlier. I really had trouble picking a dress partly because I was worried about looking good as I am a bit pudgy. In the end it was cutting it very close. I actually picked the dress up only a couple of days before we left for our wedding. So that was very stressful.

The only horror story I have is with the hem and the seamstress getting sick. The hem was really really lopsided and getting it fixed took way longer than expected. Not just with the whole flu thing, but also that bias cut silk can be difficult to work with. After it was fixed it was a bit shorter than I really wanted.

But in the end the dress was beautiful, I was beautiful, and everything was wonderful!

My dress is an Angelina Faccenda, and I ordered it through Pearl''s Place at the end of October. They told me 3 months, and it showed up a couple weeks early. My wedding is in September, and I actually ordered my dress before we even had the date completely finalized. If I did it again, I would probably order it on the same timeline, because having the swatch and dress already is turning out to be really convenient for accessory/shoe shopping, color checking, etc. I ordered 11 months out, which I think wasn''t so early that I''m about to change my mind about what I want in a dress.

1) Maggie Sottero ~ Sottero & Midgley (took 3 and 1/2 months to come in)
2) I ordered my dress in May 2007 (originally my wedding date was May 24, 2008). I ordered the dress thinking this was my date. A few weeks later, we had to move the date back to August 2, 2008 because our reverend was going on a mission trip all summer. I essentially received my dress nearly a year in advance. I''ve been nervous as hell about gaining weight, but i''ve been really good and have been maintaining my figure. If I had it to do over, I''d obviously order later (had I known the real date at the time)
3) Starting the alterations in two weeks! I''m nervous about everything as I have a complicated dress to alter! Hopefully I won''t have any "horror stories"....

Oh wow your dress was just beautiful!!

1. My dress is by Eve of Milady..It took 6 months to come in although I was originally told 8-9 months
2. If I could do it again I would have still ordered my dress at the same time. I like having things early so that I am not stressing out at the last minute.
