Hi everyone,

I am looking for a setting for a 2.61ct mrb. I have decided against a halo. I’m torn between 4, 6 or double prongs. Which is your favorite and why? Here are some inspiration photos. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

I love the idea of double prongs! It’s different and I’m assuming a little more secure than 4 prongs. 6 prongs looks like too much metal in my opinion but is better for security of the stone. Decisions decision:think:

personally, im a fan of 4 double prongs on a round brilliant. i like the aesthetic and security it provides

I like 6 for security but think 4 on a diamond under 1 carat looks less busy.
personal choice though! I’m on the mind set you should get what you think looks best and just insure the ring.

I don't like 6 prongs, but would consider 8 lol. So I voted double prongs as it still gives you that security especially for your large diamond without looking too much.

My first engagement ring had double prongs and I did love it.

If you’re torn between 4 and 6, there was a post at the beginning of the year where a lady had 5 prongs for her solitaire. It was SO beautiful and unique! I think the setting was by CVB. Will try and find it

ETA I found the thread! Even prettier than I remember:

My original engagement ring had 4 prongs, and I did have one instance of a prong apparently catching on something and bending. Luckily I saw it before the stone fell out, but I wore it for many years. Generally, I think 4 prongs is fine, but I went with 6 when I got my anniversary ring. I honestly just think you have to consider the look of the whole setting and not just the number of prongs.

My ring is 4 double prongs and I love it! It does make my stone a little less round looking, but I absolutely love it.

I liked 4 prongs until a student slammed a door on my hand and my 2.05 D-VS2 fell to the floor. I had to sit through a 3-hr orchestra rehearsal with a diamond in my pants pocket.

My new rule for myself is 6 prongs on everything over 2 carats.

I have seen the 5 prongs. In Canada we have a high end jewelry store called Birks and their signature solitaire has 5 prongs to mimic the northern star. It’s really pretty too. I just don’t want too much metal. Definitely going with a pave shank.

I also think 6 prongs makes it look more round and 4 more like a cushion.

I voted for 6 as I believe is more secure than 4.

I don't like the look of doubles.

However, in reality, I would bezel set all the stones whenever possible, and have done so in the pieces I commissioned except for one ring with a small oval Spinel in the centre.

Personal preferences and all that.

DK :))

Depends on the stone size. A carat or below 4 prongs.
Larger stones can easily get away with 6 prongs. Again, my opinion as I don’t like a lot of metal surrounding my stone. I love love a double prong look but again, for me the center stone would need to be bigger than a carat. You have the perfect size stone for 6 or double. I’d probably go double claw. My fav on larger stones.

What size is your center stone? Lovely ring.

Love love love the first pic! Of all the times I have reset my diamonds, I’ve never tried that 4 prong orientation but I have always wanted to!

Making me rethink getting a 6 prong, you just see so much more diamond

I think for that size stone I'd probably go with 6. Come back with pics!

It's really not the number of prongs, it's how bulky or refined the prongs are. You can have 6 or 8 prongs without it appearing that there is too much metal. This is one of the best reasons I can think of to recommend known PS jewelers who do nice prongs!

I love that! It looks beautiful and doesn’t look like too much metal :kiss2:

I’m really liking it too! I just want to make the right decision.

My eyes tend to gravitate to the metal first in a North set prong, so I love rotated 6 prongs!

I've always been drawn to rotated 6 prongs too (my ring that's currently in production with WF will have the same orientation!). I've never been able to articulate why until now though. Your comment is so true. Thank you!

My vote is for 6 prongs because it provides:

1. added security

2. keeps the round looking round (I find 4 prongs make it look more squarish/cushion like. My first MRB ER had 4 prongs and it looked more like a cushion though it was perfectly round)

and

3. it's a large enough stone so I think a 6 prong (if done with delicate prongs) won't be too busy a look.

My opinion only and there is no right or wrong. It comes down to your personal preference.

I think it is a classic and beautiful look with the benefit of added security.

I like double prongs on cushions better than rounds. Personal preference again.

Ok, I tried a virtual try on. Here’s what the four prong and 6 prongs look like:

Six all the way IMO. Four prongs makes the round brilliant look a bit cushiony to me. And I’d want the extra prongs for safety.

1. Your nails look fabulous :kiss2:

2. My vote is for 6 prong with the different orientation. Security and beauty
