WIDGET: Do you mind me asking where you bought your BEAUTIFUL PAD? The color is to die for.

No Linda you are not. My hubby tells me to be sure and keep that stuff locked in the safe cause people see me with it on. Never know now a days....Do you have yours insured? I don''t.Guess I need to.

Connie

Connie,

Some I do, some I don''t. But like you, we have a safe. My daughter isn''t in to jewelry like I am and she is 34 years old. Guess my grandson''s will abe getting my pieces some day. HA!!!!!

Linda

Hi, Linda...I got it from Cherrypicked. And you''re right...the color really is sensational.

But it does have it''s problems, and wouldn''t suit everybody...especially those used to Diamond-like sparkle. It has a lot of silk, which gives it a softer, "glowy" look....and the cut on it is awful!

But it''s my baby...and I love it just the way it is!

Widget,

From the picture, it looks so beautiful and perfect. As long as you love it, that is all that matters. Pads are beautiful and now it is my favorite stone. I am completely hooked on them.

i have bought for a few years, and have never been dissatisfied, until recently, when the prices have seemed to go up. You can get a good deal, though, if you are watching and you know how to "work it". I like to but frm Marvin, Ben, and Mike. The rest are crazy with their prices. My latest win was a 7 ct portuguese round copper bearing tourmaline. It appraised out for 5 times what I paid for it............

That copper bearing tourmaline does sound beautiful. PLEASE post a picture of it. I am anxious to see my Pad that I bought from Marvin.

Linda

Please do post pics.

I will try to figure out how to do that. It really did come out beautiful.............

Thanks for asking. I am going to try to figure out how to post a picture..............

One thing to keep in mind with the Gem shopping channels, they always play the appraisal game. No one EVER pays what the appraised price is. Typically if you get an appraisal for $1000, expect to pay about $300 for the stone. Now try to sell it for $1000. Listen to Marvin and the gang, and they will have you thinking you can buy a stone from them for $300, and run out to your local jeweler and sell it for a profit. Just not going to happen.
I think a few years ago their prices were not bad, but it seems something has changed over there the past year, and I would say they are on the high end and often with low quality goods.

Are you speaking of the appraisals or the list prices they give? They(GSN) always have a large list price..Why do they give about 3 different prices? They will give list price, sell price and then what they actually sell it for!

I know I have bought from JTV and had somethings appraised and they RETAIL appraised for WAY more than I actually paid. I have also seen items they have that I have seen in retail and they were selling them at 1/3 the price of the retail. I have seen that with my own eyes & on more than one item...finished jewelry pieces that is!

Connie

Connie,
From what I see, usually Marvin starts out with a "Retail Price" this is usually near or at the so called
"Apprasial", then he whistles, and cuts the price in half. Tells you it''s a give away, then cuts the price some more. Finially he comes to a price that I would consider to be a typical retail price. This is usually about 1/3 of the appraisal or "retail price". Nobody ever pays "retail price" anywhere, and he knows this, and also knows that if you buy the piece and take it to get appraised it will appraise out somewhere around this artificial "retail price", and then you will think "wow...I got this stone for a steal since I only paid 1/3 of the appraised value!". Now I challange anyone to sell this stone for the appraised value. Or even what you paid for it.
I see them selling poor color slightly included pink tourmaline for $300 per ct. and tellling you it should sell for $900 per ct, and it''s very poorly cut. This is crazy. This type of material well cut and clean should sell for $100 to $150 per ct.

The mixed gem parcels are another thing. This is all the junk they had to buy when buying larger parcels to get a good price. The impression is that the buyer is treausure hunting and who knows, may find something really valuable in there. These guys are not fools, they aren''t going to by accident let a $500 stone fall into one of these parcels.

I think the best service these shows do, is to educate people on the various types of gemstones that are available.

i am in the same situation. i am disabled and my husband and kids think that i am nuts. i watch the gem and jewelry shows all day. I buy so much stuff. alot of it i return because i didnt like it once i got it home. but the loose gems are my favorite. i can look at them for hours. my husband says that they should have names by now. I can''t win. when i was doing nothing and suffering from suvere depression they told me to find something that would make me happy and now that i have found something to make me happy they are saying that i watch the shows too much....... i give up... i am addicted to them. if you watch jtv dont ever buy the large parcels they are full of filler gems and not much else. only buy the kits that they are trying to lure in new customers with. those are the ones that will have more of a selection. heck, i have gotten better gems from the 20 ct kits at times ---better than the ones with more carats. i say do what makes you happy...if you get a little happiness from it do it.. we dont have much else to do. i am in bed most of the time. i am only 39. it is better thank going out of my mind.,

stone junkie:

You are not alone. I too am disabled and mostly house-bound. Although I live on the other side of the world and don''t have the luxury of 24/7 gem and jewelry channels, these types of shows have been gaining in popularity here too. As a matter of fact I started learning about gems and jewelry from these shows and expanded by doing research on the Internet.
Over the last 3-4 years I''ve made a nice little collection (and some duds from when I didn''t know any better!) Like you, I rarely wear the stuff since even when I go out it''s hard to coordinate jeans, sneakers and a wheelchair with diamonds, rubies and pearls. It can get to be an expensive hobby since the more I learn, the stricter my criteria become but it does help me spend a few hours every day in an almost "normal" mode.
I make excuses for the expense to myself by saying that I can maybe sell the stuff later - ha!

Anyway, I just wanted you to know that you are not alone.
