Yanno, Allisonfaye brings up an interesting point. Aside from the fact that any more than 2 drinks and I''m down on all four barking like a dog, there''s also the calorie issue. At 100 cals per glass of wine (and SO MANY cals I can''t even think about it in things like margaritas) I have to choose between food and alcohol or else I''ll weight 500 lbs. So it''s not necessarily that I don''t *want* another glass of wine or a pina colada, but I want french fries and chocolate peanutbutter icecream more, lOL.

LOL Deejay! We are twins!

I drink red wine exclusively (well not now, since I am pregnant....) and only a glass on the few weeknights (once or twice during week) and 2, MAYBE 3 on a weekend evening if we are out with friends etc. But I''m worried more about calories than anything & have to "save up" for my "treats". LOL.

Mmmm...you are making me want choc pb icecream right now....YUM!!!! (my faves are from Baskin Robbins & Tillamook Creamery)

But DH & I are defininte social drinkers. He loves micro beer & I love wine. I used to adore cocktails, but I get too tipsy too fast on them, so they are reserved for vacations where children are NOT involved or if we are having a major party & my son is spending the night at gramma & grandpas... Then I become master mixologist...cosmos, dirty martinis, lemondrops, blueberry pomegranate martinis, etc. I make a KILLER cosmo. Mmmm...as soon as I''ve recovered from childbirth etc...I''m having DH take me out for sushi & a martini. mmm.

I love a good margarita, but again, calories. My mom came up with a great "diet-rita". Key Lime juice (some brand at safeway....no calories) splenda, triple sec, and tequila. Cuts down on the sugar calories quite a bit. Not too bad. You have mix the lime juice with water & splenda first. I can''t quite remember, its been awhile.

I never drink beer...I think it''s unclassy and not very feminine. No offense to those who like it, but I just sort of can''t wrap my head about drinking it.

Ironically, I also don''t like fruity girly drinks, cause they''re too feminine. I don''t really want to drink something that a man wouldn''t be caught dead drinking. Also ironically, fiance really enjoys strawberry daiquiris and other fruity margaritas - sometimes the virgin (!!) variety, which doesn''t bother me at all.

I don''t know why I care so much about what other people think of what I''m drinking, but I do

LOL, I love Miller Lite, I know it''s not the most feminine thing to drink beer, but I just don''t care, ha! My MIL drinks two beers a night, without fail, and she''s the epitome of elegance and "class." When I was dating DH and was going to meet his parents for the first time, I expressed my concerns over drinking in front of his parents to him, and he told me, my mother will not like you if you can''t sit outside with her on the patio and have a beer with her!
9.gif

My own mother is of the same mind as you, basil, she thinks its terrible to see a woman drinking a beer, especially out of a bottle and not a glass, at least! Different strokes for different...you know. It just cracks me up because I''m pretty girly and feminine and I love beer, but I can understand those who don''t think it''s the most feminine thing to drink.

I used to HATE beer (pre-21st birthday). FI eased me into it... Corona first, then the "stronger" ones, thought I have to admit I haven't gotten very far along with that! Now I love Hefeweizen and Heineken. I prefer beer to any other alcoholic drink. Well, maybe champagne...
2.gif

Wine: Rieslings, Spätleses, Gerwurtztraminers, anything German--because they're sweet! Don't like reds, at all.

Hard: Vodka tonic (my fav), amaretto sour (does that count?), long island iced tea (when it's made RIGHT, it's GOOD!)

It never occurred to me that drinking beer would make me appear classless or masculine. Then again, I guess I've never really been conscious of such things!!

Forget about women drinking beer being unclassy, what''s up with all this Coors, Miller, Budweiser domestic beer business

Blech.

It took me quite a while to get through this thread, and it was really quite enlightening! My name (sipper) refers to my drinking habits basically...lol! I am what would probably be considered to be a "cheap date", because I can literally make one drink last all evening long! My choice of poison is usually a margarita, on the rocks with LOTS of salt on the rim. Second place would probably be a Tequila Sunrise (anyone see a pattern here?) After that, I don''t know because I haven''t had too many different kinds of drinks. I stick to pretty much the same thing when I find something I really like.

I''ve never been much of a wine drinker. Same goes for beer. Not too long ago, my husband and I went out with friends for a pizza and beer thing. I actually ordered a bottle of beer and drank the ENTIRE thing! My husband just about fell off of his chair (and no, he wasn''t even drinking that night!) It was the first time in nearly 20 years of knowing me that he''d ever seen me finish a whole beer. I usually only sip (told you I resemble my nickname) and it takes me forever to drink even one beer. My husband usually finishes them off for me, as a matter of fact.

I have been anxious to try a Mojito. Are they very good? Something tells me I would probably like one of those...

Re the Mojito, I have friends who only drink it and nothing else. Personally I don''t like it, I find it too bitter.

Lien, a good mojito should not be bitter, it is basically sugar and lime and rum, with some mint, so unless the ratios are off it should be refreshing and sweet, a bit tart but not bitter.

I drink a glass of red wine with dinner if we go out. I rarely open wine at home unless we have guests. I will have the occasional cosmo or fun drink, but really prefer red wine, and it has to be good wine, or I will get a killer migraine. I like champagne and sometimes Pinot Grigio in the summer, but red wine is really it for me. I am not a big drinker, but sometimes at parties have to slow down because I always seem to be the last one to eat the appetizers and I cannot handle too much on an empty stomach.

I also have never consumed a beer, it just does not appeal to me. I have heard there are some summer ales that are nice, but overall the taste is too much for me.

df, I meant to tell you in my Chicago thread, that I had a Raspberry mojita at lunch with Dee, it was really pretty good. Much better than the one in Cancun!

DF, Ellen, the next time hubby and I are in Chicago, I''m going to try the Mojito again. I tried it twice, once in VN in a 5-star hotel and the next time it was in the Fullerton in S''pore, a top-notch hotel, kind of like a 5-6 star hotel, very popular and extremely "high-end" (and by that I mean they charge something like $USD23 for a glass of champagne, but I guess that doesn''t necessarily mean they know how to make a *killer Mojito", LOL!) and they both tasted aweful!. Anywhere in Chicago you ladies might want to recommend?

i love vodka mojitos!! i prefer vodka over rum as it's a cleaner liquor and less calories, and then i just have them add a bit more sugar and it's sooo TASTY when done right. lien, if you get a bitter one ask for more sugar to be added. a lot of times the bartenders don't do the right ratio, it really is to 'preference'.

recently when traveling, a restaurant made me a drink that i loved...it had cranberry juice, peach schnapps, citron vodka, and lime juice over ice...sooo yummy and refreshing. also recently at a moroccan place they had a moscato with mascerated strawberries in it, omg that was divine. i am going to try this the next time we open a bottle of moscato, the strawberries were so amazing with the bubbly sweetness of the moscato. i love unique kind of drinks like that...or also a nice blended bellini, yummy. a local place makes the best guava margaritas...but i tend to hardly have them because of the CRAZY cals in them. if i am just out having a drink with friends i'll do a vodka tonic and sip it, typically i don't finish a drink unless it's a fruity drink with dinner then i might have one or two depending.

Oh yes! Go to Carnivale at 702 W. Fulton. The food is great too! Unfortunately last week when Ellen and I went there for lunch the main dining room was closed for a private function, but this place also has the best diamond lighting I''ve ever seen!

Yes, the food was good, and it''s a neat atmosphere, even though we didn''t get the room with the good lighting.

HI:

I broke my 3 (or is it 4 month) self imposed/health motivated etoh abstinence, and had a cocktail when out for dinner celebrating Fathers Day. Seemed harmless enuf--vanilla vodka, strawberry liqueur, champage and lemonade--but WHAT a headache I have today!!
14.gif
Over one silly drink! I can''t image how I''d feel if I still drank those horrid rusty nails or paralyzers we drank in our youth

Alcohol is an interesting thing to navigate.

I never drank a drop until college, when my boyfriend''s older friends and parents would serve me a drink or two in a very non-chalant, non-frat party type way. Yes, I was in a sorority, but I never used it for underaged drinking and was something of a no-show.

So since college has been my only real experience with it. I remember when I''d never had three drinks before . . . or when I had four for the first time and was pretty well drunk.

I''d say I drink more nights than I don''t. And I have a second drink more nights than I don''t. In a bar or restaurant I won''t have more than three or four drinks. I''ve had five at the outdoor concert series where five is the limit and the ticket dispenser looked at me with disdain when I bought my last ticket. The times when I get in trouble are at parties or at home, like the party last summer where all the bartenders turned out to be strippers and I drank way too many gin and tonics prepared by fake bartenders who didn''t know how much to put in them.
7.gif
That was not pleasant.

DH and I are also in a wine club. We''re in our late twenties, and the other members are all 40''s + (most of our friends our age don''t have discrentionary income). We pay several hundred dollars every meeting or two to three, then hire a chef and buy more than one bottle of expensive wine per person to compare in a blind taste-test. I can''t say I object to this arrangement.

My drink of choice has evolved just like my tolerance. It was all rose wine at first, then chardonnay. Right now I''m in a French white bordeaux phase. Sometimes I crave red, but mostly when I''m eating red meat, which has been a lot less lately. I also like my vodka + cranberry juice or tonic and gin + tonic. Sometimes a margarita really hits the spot. And for Sunday brunch, there''s nothing like a mimosa to start. I can''t say I ever crave beer, but sometimes it''s tolerable, like when you''re at a baseball game in St. Louis and there''s not much else to do.

DH was making fun of me tonight because he thought I was drunk after two (pretty generous) glasses of wine. So I guess our expectations are that that''s a little amount. Of course, I have read the recommendations that females not drink more than one glass per day, and I take my folic acid to counteract the depletitive effect that alcohol seems to have, so who knows . . . perhaps I am really screwing myself up. But generally I think I need to worry about the calories more than anything since three drinks seems to make me a bit loosened up but not really drunk at this stage of my life.

phoenix, do you live near St. Louis? I am about 20 miles north of there on the IL side of the river.

No, I don''t live in the area. That was just the last time I remember ordering a beer because I really wanted one. It had something to do with the hotdogs and lack of other choices for alcoholic beverages. :)
