i was quoted a price on just this sapphire. and i was wondering if its a good price. so please look at the pictures and the details and tell me what you think. its .98ct or 5.88mm, unheated purple sapphire.the description is as follows

The violet sapphire elicits a stunning rich purple color that is beautifully and evenly saturated throughout the stone. The stone weighs 0.98 carats, measures 5.88 mm and is rated in the top of its class not only for its premium untreated color but also for excellent clarity, precision American faceting and phenomenal brilliance.

please let me know what ya think. in the ring, the total price is $3,850.00
whats fair for just the sapphire? i love the color of this sapphire. just love it.

I think the bulk of the price is in the setting. Does it come with certification on it being untreated?

Sounds like it to me too. There's a lot of light on that stone, which I think gives a bit of an illusion it will always look that color. Natural light would be best to see its color IMO. I'd ask for more pictures without the camera flash.

BTW, my sapph is of a similar color (see avitar). IMO, its worth talking to some of the trust gem vendors on pricescope to see what they have.

In my case, I spent less then 300 on an unheated stone.

yes it does come with a cert. but would you be surprised to hear i was quoted $2250 as the price for the stone. JUST THE STONE!!! this really saddens me as i love the color. so now tell me what you all think... is it worth it?
if it isnt, what do i say? i mean what is a fair price that could be asked for?

I would be looking in a few other places. My answer would be not only be no, but hell no. I could see MAYBE for an ideal colored sapph, but not for this one.

You have to consider that buying a stone out of a custom made ring, there will be some extra costs involved. The stone needs to be removed, and then what to do with the ring? I''m sure it was made for this stone. I''m sure she would much rather sell the ring and stone together. Kind of like asking to buy only the engine out of a car at a new car dealership.

the ring has been up for sale for over a year, that i have seen.....

it was posted on here on a thread i did that long ago.
i do feel bad for asking her to take it out,.. but not so bad i would pay over 2g''s
what should a stone like this cost? im just curious... meaning if it was already loose, what would be reasonable to pay?

very apt observation, Gene!

This sapphire from The natural sapphire co is going for $600/ct (.93 ct) and it kind of looks about the same shade as you picture.

And this one is going for $1800/ct (.98 ct) and it''s color seems more in line with the written description.

That''s extremely overpriced for that stone. I wouldn''t pay more than $500 for it, even unheated. I think Barry Bridgestock has sold similar material for a fraction of that cost, as well as Gene. Violet sapphires do not carry the same premium as pure blue colors. Also remember that sapphire is a very dense material, so a one carat sapphire is going to look very small. Pretty stone, but overpriced.

Richard Wise has a gorgeous purple cushion on his website right now. It doesn''t have the price listed but I would look into it.

i thought it seemed a bit much. the seller also said if i buy it this week she will let it go for $1850 being the sale price. but even then, i agree with you TL, its overpriced.

the reason i like this stone is it seems purple, with blue and pink. all three my fav colours.

if anyone sees something out there like this for me... around the 6mm mark, please let me know. i do like the 1st one kismet posted, but its missing something that this one has... maybe its the flash photograph

Trishy, I think you''re seeing what you''re seeing because of the flash. First thing I would have asked for is some pictures in natural light without camera flash because most stones will show very differently without it.

I purchased my stone from Gary Dutton. Here''s one that he calls a medium purpleish blue. Its not the greatest picture but it wouldn''t hurt to ask about some additional ones in differnt lighting. It also dosen''t hurt to ask if he can keep a lookout for one if you don''t happen to like this one.

If you''re looking for a purple sapphire, here''s a Richard Homer one. And it''s price is more in line with that of your jeweler

Here''s a Richard Homer lavender sapphire that''s closer in color to the one you pictured. But the price per carat is still up there.

homerlavsapph.jpg

both R. Homer''s look to be better quality stones......but who can really trust a picture.......i''d go a RHomer over the original at those prices.

Here's a roval that might interest you. And with a far lower price.

ETA: It's about 1/5 down the page.

Here are some more sapphires from Planetary Gems. #1-3 are on the first page, while #4-5 are on the fourth page.

this one is lookin REALLY CLOSE!! look at the description!!

unheated, "fancy", Ceylon sapphire weighting 0.79 cts., medium, intense, pure violet color, with bluish undertones (and excellent saturation) in daylight, changing to an awesome, medium purple-pink in incandescent light its 5mm and only $190

im gonna try to put my original and thisone side by side

purple 0.79ct - $190.jpg

yep its a pretttttttty close color match i think... with a $2000 differential in price...

purple compare.jpg

don''t want to burst the bubble but pictures are usually not totally accurate, especially for a $190 unheated sapphire as stated. make sure there is a good return policy, have it sent to you, then make your decision. high quality sapphires command high prices. most of us have to make adjustments due to budget. however, it might out perform the original stone.........for your needs, your budget, and the fact that i just don''t think it looked that great. but then again, perhaps it was the picture and not the stone. color stones are so hard to photograph.

mz

ps many vendors photoshop their stones in an attempt to make the photos look like the stone in real life; however, many photoshop it to make it saleable......

Please double check the return policy on that stone and also ask for additional pictures on the back of the hand. It is difficult to judge the colour even when you place them side by side because the lighting, camera setup, etc are all different. I am with MZ in questioning an unheated sapphire of 0.79 ct for $190 for such a rich colour. It’s always a good idea to be cautious.

so the return policy reads as follows:

Unconditional guarantee, no question asked!

Important: If for some reasons, you wish to make a return on loose stones or already made jewelry, you can send back within 7 business days after the item(s) has reached you. You will receive 100% refund less shipping charges, no questions asked. Items that are not in their original conditions, altered, damaged, worn or switched will not be refunded. We are strict about this point.

Important: All returns must be notified to us by phone or e-mail prior sending back. We will provide you with a return #. This will help us to make the particular item(s) available to other customers. If returns do not honor the 7 days, inspection period, the sale is considered final. If you need a couple of days more to decide, that is fine, but please let us know. The customer assumes his/her own responsibility in sending back by any major carrier in proper secure and sturdy packaging (for FedEx and UPS use medium boxes and for USPS use their boxes as well), and most off all, they need to be insured for full value and sent in timely manner.

what do you think? is this ok?

i was thinking this one is cheaper as it looks like its cut off center, and yes this does bother me. so im thinking i will ask that question and for extra pics. i wont be ordering it if it is not symetrical. but we shall see. im still excited to find other sapph''s that are the color im lookin for that are much much more affordable

Yes, ask the vendor for additional pictures. One with it face down on a flat surface to check the depth and culet), and another on the back of the hand.
