How snug (or loose) do you like your rings?

Reading Amyjokerette''s thread about her ring cutting into her (and people''s replies) made me wonder how everyone wears their rings? Tight to the finger? Loose so it moves around?

Sometimes I see a photo someone has posted that shows daylight around the outside of their ring and I think "Wow, that looks so LOOSE to me. That would drive me nuts". I like my rings VERY tight to my finger (just big enough to slip over the knuckle with some pushing) I''ve always worn really BIG rings (not diamonds unfortunately, just silver jewellery with big semi-precious stones, lucite rings, etc. "Fun" jewellery) and I found that if the ring was too loose, it would slide around too much. I like them to "stay put" in the middle of my finger, not spin around like a propeller.

But now I''m getting an eternity ring (e-ring and wedding band) so the size is going to have to be perfect and I''m trying to make sure I get it just right. I''d hate to buy it too small. Also the whole "what if you have an accident and they can''t get it off?" is something to consider I guess.

Thoughts? Stories about rings being too big or too small?

I don''t have any stories, but I always have opinions!! I like my rings a little on the loose side, especially the wider ones. I have short chubby fingers and I hate when the rings make them look "sausagy." I also know that my ring size has changed from a 6 to an 8 over 20 years of marriage, so that is always a consideration too.

I like my rings snug on my finger, but not so tight that I have the "sausagy" (is that a word?) feel from the poster above. I always used to wear costume jewelry that was size 6 that I thought fit perfectly, but when FI gave me my platinum ER, it''s very loose, even around my knuckle...so I am waiting to have it re-sized.

Sometimes my fingers swell in the summer and I don''t want to resize now that it''s winter and have it make my fingers look pudgy in the summer.

I like my rings to *fit* ... but for that to happen, it needs to be midday in the spring on a blue moon. Because otherwise, my size fluctuates up to a full size. I can wear a 5 comfortably, so my anniversary band is a 5, my e-ring a 5.5, and my wedding band a comfort-fit 5.75. On cold days, they spin like little carousels, on warm days, I switch one ring over to my other hand. It works out pretty nicely.

For an eternity, I''d go a quarter-size up from what you usually wear: for one thing, you''ll be wearing it with other rings, so the leeway will come in handy, and for another, unlike the other rings you mentioned, this one won''t be top-heavy, and shouldn''t be prone to quite as much spinning. And try them on, if you can! I love eternity bands of all sorts, but it wasn''t until I tried one on that I realized I''d never be able to wear a shared prong band - too thick between my fingers, and too much irritation from the prongs. Experiment!

In summer my ring is snug but it rolls in the winter. I wish it was just right all year round at not to tight but not rolling.

Loose enough to fit over my knuckle when my finger swells, but not loose enough to fly off if I wave my hand! My rings are a little bit looser than I would like... But my hands tend to swell so much in the summer that it''s not worth it to re-size them.

Hmmm - good point about the summer winter thing (although mine tend to be tighter in winter ''cause my weight goes up after Christmas! lol Like right now!!!! Get me to the gym!)

Also good point about the eternity band being a bit bigger than the e-ring, I hadn''t considered that (having different sizes for both) If I end up with a "complete" eternity band, it can spin like crazy and look the same. If my e-ring ends up sitting up high, it will have to be tighter for sure.

Hey, I just read in another thread about getting little "balls" put into the inside bottom of a ring so it doesn''t spin? Anyone tried that?

Tight rings drive me bonkers. I am actually about an 8.5 but I prefer a 9. I wear 4 thin rings stacked and they are all 9s and they are gloriously loose in the winter and snug in the summer. With an eternity band I would definitely go a little looser. Good luck!

First of all... a great big *~*whew*~* that I''m not the only girl whose finger can swell so bad the ring leaves dents in it and suddenly within mere moments go so skinny it is swinging around my finger like a hula-hoop! I''ve always wondered if I''m the only hormonal wierdo!!!

In a perfect non-puffy world, I would like my rings slightly loose. I tend to have naturally chubby fingers, even when I''m slim. I feel like when my ring isn''t too tight then I don''t have a ring "muffin top" on my finger!

I try to get them an eighth of a size larger than my official size.
Thankfully, my fingers don''t seem to change size as frequently/drastically as some other members describe.
I really dislike the feel and appearance of too tight.

Ditto. I also take medication that gives me water issues sometimes. I can''t be sizing my rings every few weeks/months. In the summer it is very hot and humid here. Winters can be bitterly cold, or mild. My rings spin a lot of the time, but sometimes they do feel snug too, based on all these factors. I would rather have them snug some of the time than spinning all of the time.

Well, I was sized by almost every jeweler as a 6.25-6.5. I bought my e-ring in a 6.25 to be on the tight/safe side. It was loose enough that it went flying off my hand into the sink when I was shaking them off after washing!!

Needless to say, I immediately had it resized to a 6. That is still loose enough that it slides and turns around whenever my hands are slightly cold/wet. It mostly stays put when I'm at a comfortable temperature and dry.

I have a 5.5 ring that I bought with the intention of having it resized, and it's actually an almost-perfect fit - snug, but not tight. I think I'm actually somewhere between a size 5.5-5.75. How strange.

Like Musey, jewelers seemed to consistently size me too big (I wonder why that is?). Most put me at a 3-3.25, and even advised me to get a 3.5. My e-ring was originally a 3.25, and it was huge on me. Even in hot weather, it could not stay upright on my finger. I ended up with a 2.5. It is pretty snug, but it will definitely still spin and move around quite a bit in cooler weather. I like it to be on the snug side so it feels more secure.

This is a great description.

I like my rings a tad on the loose side, but not so loose I can fling them off of my finger. In the summer they are still a bit snug sometimes. Someone once told me at a jewelers that a perfect fit is slightly loose in the Winter and slightly snug in the Summer and that''s as good of a fit you can get!

Jewelers consistently size me as a 3.75, and my e-ring, which is a custom plat setting for an OEC, was made as a 3.75. Which means that my ring spins like crazy and it''s even flown off (I think I posted on this forum wondering if I could have hurt the stone) in cold weather. In warmer weather the 3.75 seems to fit better but still loose. I have been wondering if I should downsize to a 3.5? Would the quarter size make a difference? I have larger knuckles b/c I rock climb and garden, and the stress from those activities makes my knuckles slightly bulgier, but my fingers themselves (where the ring sits) is a lot more slender...

Decisions, decisions.

I don''t even use those ring sizer things that jewellers have when they''re on the big ring (the kind that looks like a big key ring with all the little rings lined up on it?) The pressure of trying to keep the ring you''re trying on upright makes it not accurate I think. I think it also depends on what size shank you''re trying on (obviously a thinner shank will fit over your knuckle easier than thicker if it''s a big snug) AND how they''ve gauged the size of the ring itself (if the head of the ring sits a bit on the mandrel, it''ll be sized bigger than it actually is) This has all made me decide that I''m going to go to a local silver jewellery store and buy a couple of different rings in the same mm as the bands I want and wear them for a bit - see how they pan out.....

thanks everybody for your input!

LOL - but ditto. Mine are tight in the morning and loose in the evenings. Tighter even in summer (I need to lose those Holiday lbs!).

I have to *beg* jewelers to make my rings 4.5-4.75. I can't stand rings that are too tight. I'd rather have them loose and spin a little than be a metal finger corset.

i like my rings on the loose side, i don''t like the look of finger muffin top.

I like my rings a tad loose also, but like everyone else - they fluctuate greatly. I went to a jeweler the other day and he measured me at a 6.5 - I about choked. 20 years ago I wore a 7.5. 10 years ago I wore an 8. I did lose some weight and have long fingers, but a size and a half???? Sound WAY to snug to me.

I like a perfect fit. Not too tight, not too loose. No sausaging and minimal to no spinning allowed

I would like mine to fit a little tighter, but b/c of my knuckles I have to keep it about a 1/2 size bigger. When I first got my e-ring, it was in the summer and it fit fine then, but in the winter it spun like crazy... so I went back to my jeweler and had them put beads in to help keep it from spinning.

The beads work well - I can still get it on and off over my knuckles (sometimes I need to get my hands a little wet), but it really helps keep it from spinning. Also, the beads aren''t permanent so they can be removed at anytime.
