How to measure for a new stone?

Hi all,
I have a ring that is very sentimental. I would like to order a new stone for the setting, but I’m unsure what the stone size is. Is there an easy way to figure this out at home or do I need to ask a jeweler?

Best to speak to a jeweller.
You can buy electronic measuring calipers off eBay but getting a jeweller to look at it is probably best.
Depending on the setting type, ie claw set, there can be some leeway in size of gemstone however rim or bezel settings require a precision match.
Also remember that the depth of the gem matters as well.
