Hubby said yes to a 3 stone EC diamond ring for our 40th!!

Some tips on this thread:

Hi. I did it with both a white paper and a white screen on my phone. I’ve watched a couple of videos on it but am going to learn more at IDJ when I can compare more than one diamond. I can also have Yuketiel look at my current stone too.

Hi All,
I went to "IDJ today in NYC. Unfortunately, the woman I spoke with did not mark down my appointment and Yuketael was not there and they didn't have any diamonds to show me.
But, as these things happen, I left all my information and requirements and asked for them to call me when Yuketael had something to show me and was available. I'm not in a rush and I want to do this right.
I'd just like to clarify the dimensions I gave him: Total Depth: 63-65%
Table: 62-67%, G color or better, VS1 or better (depending on where inclusions are and how they affect the diamond), LtoW ratio right around 1.4, Polish/Symmetry VG or EX.

I would appreciate your thoughts. I am still going to go see the Blue Nile diamond later this week.

Perhaps, you should call Jonathan at Distinctive Gem?

I just might do that. I see they have a concierge service. I'll give IDJ another chance and also check out the BN diamond.

I'd like your thoughts on this diamond.
Yuketial is bringing it in for me to see on Monday. He has all the scopes there for me to look at it. (And of course I have my trusty ASET scope with me). I spoke with him at lenght about a 3 stone all EC, vs. baguette setting as he said the type of setting I decide on will dictate the dimensions of the center stone. I mentioned I originally wanted all EC's but am worried it will take away from the center stone if not proportional and set the right way. He agreed. So he looked closely at 33 stones for me and really likes this one. It is a longer stone than I was looking for, but I am willing to look at it. I will of course send more info after seeing it on Monday but would like your thoughts on the video and cert.

I am also picking up the BN stone today and will post photos and info on that tonight.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Hello! Thoughts on this BN diamond?
(Also see the IDJ stone above)
I picked up the BN diamond tonight. Couldn't get sunlight shots but I took whatever photos and movies I could. I think I see a dark flash, but maybe that is normal. I also don't see a lot of red in the ASET, but I'm not as familiar with step cut ASET's as round. Please let me know your thoughts.
This is 2.51 E VVS2. Ex Ex Faint FL
8.98 x 6.37 x 4.41mm

While I was at BN I tried on a 3 ct. stone and really liked the size on my hand. (What's not to like!). This brought me back to @MammaBee 's 3 stone as I love those proportions. So many decisions! I emailed Yuketael and asked him to look for some stones just under 3. In the meantime, I brought the BN stone home so I could get some more photos/videos in different light.
@Karl_K this BN stone was the one you thought I should bring in and I'd love yourASET Photo BN 2.51 E.jpegBN 2.51 E Cert.jpeg thoughts.

Trying to upload movies (.mov). It's not working. What do I have to convert them to?

Hi Again,
How do I upload movies??

Hi Again,
How do I upload movies??

Vids can not be directly loaded to PS. You can make an (anonymous) acct on Youtube/ Viimeo and upload the link. Or if you have an (anomymous) IG account, you can upload vids to there and post the link.

Hope this helps!

Also, maybe try taking the ASET out of the clip?

This is an interesting thread…

Thank you, I made a Rumble account so I'm trying that with one video, then I'll post the rest.

OMG. Thanks Lulu_ma! That video from Good Old Gold was great. It helped to see the flashes and the accompanying ASETs and then listen to his evaluation,

Do you have the stone in hand? If so, score a lid like this one and try to take another ASET image.

Please let me know if there are any other photos/videos I should take.
My thoughts are, IRL I see flashes of color, but they seem mostly limited to the corners, which is not where I want them to be.

I tried your suggestion and this is what I got. I only have one phone now so I couldn't use a backlight. I just put a white paper under it. When my husband comes home I can use his phone to backlight.

It does look better IRL, but after watching the video lulu_ma sent me, I don't see the flashes across the belly when I move it.

So, just for the heck of it, I went on BG and this was the only EC that popped up in Black. But regardless of the size, I wanted to see what the ASET looked like in a really good cut.

Quick question: I've scoured several sights, including WF above about EC's. I don't see this mentioned at all, so I'm thinking it doesn't play as important a role, but I'd like to know for sure. Does the crown and pavillion % play a role in EC performance? Everything I read talks about depths and LW ratios. Are the %'s used for RB and other cuts only?

Yes, crown and pavilion angles are only used for MRBs. GIA doesn't even list them for OECs. For ECs I think there is too much variation in length/width ratio.

There's a good discussion on this thread,

Have you seen this? It's is not the end all be all, but is a good visual reference.

Table of my EC is a little big at 65%. I freaked out when I took the ASET, but I *think* I got lucky. I've had this stone since before PS existed...

Thanks Lulu_ma. I like the fact that your stone has good light return in the center. I don't see that on mine. I still have to take the photo with a backlight. I am also going back to IDJ on Monday. Yekutiel thinks he found an exceptional 2.52 (posted above) and I also asked him to look for 3ct. as maybe I should focus on the center stone and just keep it in a simple setting, then decide if I want the 3 stone, etc.

Then, there is always, go for broke, and look at Jann Paul - either their EC or decagon.

The backlight is key imo. Make sure you get that pic before you eliminate the BN one.

I do agree that the center stone is key. And for that reason, I think you should get the L/W ratio that you prefer.

I don't know anything about Jann Paul EC pricing. Is it more, less or the same as the Brian Gavin ECs?

IMHO, emerald cuts really need to be evaluated with your eyes. They can be so different looking. Of course you want a good performer that flashes on and off and has no dead spots, but it also comes down to what you find personally appealing. Make sure you find one that makes your heart sing. Enjoy the experience. I'm excited for you!

Im sorry for not helping more I set my neck off again so have not been at my PC to study the imaging you posted. I will try later today or early tomorrow.

Thanks Karl. No worries. More important that you feel better. My videos aren’t that great. I’m going to IDJ tomorrow and I asked him to bring in some choices and possibly closer to 3ct. I will get better photos and videos from him.

FINALLY! Something to show you. I finally got to meet with Yekutiel at IDJ today. We decided to look for a 3ct + instead of the 2.5. I think, based on my current ring, that is where we need to be.
He brought in this stone (3.03 H VS1) and it is beautiful. There is no tint, even though it is an H and a very clean stone. The proportions are right and IRL it has great light return. I am happy with it, but as it is only the 2nd stone I've seen, he's going to hold this one and bring in another - (3.0 G VVS2) and I will go back next week to compare the two side by side and he will continue looking in case something extraordinary pops up. I'd love all your thoughts!

I'll post the photos I have from the vendor of the 3.0 G VVS2 in the next thread.

Here is the video for the 3.03 H VS1. I'l get video of the other stone next week.

Here are photos of the 3.0 G VVS2 that he was able to get from the supplier. I haven't seen this one IRL yet. More to come next week.Image 1633437ecfae73382d81f398c.JPG
