Hello lovely PS'ers

I am hunting for a black Australian opal. I am still undecided on how it will be set as the main focus for me is the quality of the opal. I would rather have a .5ct that blows me away than a larger less colourful opal.

I have had a look at opal auctions I am based in Australia and surprisingly most sites I pull up are US market focused.

Has anyone purchased an opal recently that can recommend a seller ? I am even looking at preloved jewellery

Thanks so much

Hello there! Well you're certainly in the right part of the world to be hunting black opal. 8-) I purchased my lightning ridge stone from justopal.com. David was lovely to work with. Good luck!!

Mine are from Black Opal Direct (owned by Justin and Ruth) and M’s Opal World (the owner of M’s, Jordan, is a PSer - jordyonbass).

Can’t say enough good things about both. I’ll be going back for another really spectacular crystal in 2023.

Opal Auctions is… eBay for opals. Some honest sellers, lots of frauds. A few genuinely spectacular pieces, lots of edited-with-photoshop. I “won” three opals, one was very nice and the other two (all about the same price range) were outright misrepresented. With shops like BoD and M’s - you do pay a slight premium for their expertise but you’re guaranteed to get what you pay for. And with opals - there are no established independent authorities, there are no ubiquitously-accepted grading standards - buying from a trusted vendor is that much more critical!!

I bought two opals from Black Opals Direct. I’m very pleased with both of them - they were what I expected after looking at the videos online. Service was excellent and delivery was fast.

Thanks I am enjoying watching the videos they are gorgeous
