I finally did it, I sold the 10+ct marquise. It was a little bittersweet but I hadn’t seen it in months and I didn’t miss it so I knew it was time to find something to be obsessed with and wear every day. My new dilemma is figure out what the replacement should be. I really, really thought it was going to be the JbG 4.00 J VS1 ACC. Grace sent it to me and it’s gorgeous but I just don’t know! It fit my search criteria: 10mm, near colorless, and good performance. It’s so pretty! I don’t know why I didn’t immediately fall head over heels for it. I’ve been lusting after it since OWD had it. It’s only been here a few hours and it’s slowly growing on me but I can’t help think, is there something better out there? Now I’m not even sure if I want another old cut. I love MRB’s and OEC’s equally and I’ve been wearing a haloed 9mm OEC since Christmas. I’m wondering if that’s why this didn’t have the impact I was hoping for. I’ve never worn a cushion. Could that be it? I’m feeling a little crazy.

So I guess this is a 2 part question:
1. Is this a normal reaction? I’m not a very excitable person by nature but diamonds are usually the exception.
2. Is there something better out there that I’ll kick myself for not buying instead? (OEC or MRB budget $38K)

Here’s the stone - http://jewelsbygrace.smugmug.com/Loose-Diamonds/201-and-larger/400ct-Antique-Cushion-Cut-Diam/

It is absolutely gorgeous. I don't have a cushion, but if I did, I'd wear your stone, it is simply stunning!!

Maybe you are not overwhelmed due to your OEC?? This cut in that cushion though, would be hard to find again easily. Of course, I'm not an expert re cut, but to my eyes, it looks terrific.

Wow, what a hard decision you have in front of you--I'd just take my time, best of luck!

That AVR is beautiful. Unfortunately my budget isn’t that flexible. I can’t really find any faults with this cushion. I think the cut is great, I really like the faceting, it faces up more white than I’m used to. That’s why I’m wondering if it is the shape since I’m used to rounds. Maybe it’s just that we’re in the middle of remodeling a new house and I’m burnt out on decision making. :?

Had you considered any other shape? Like a step cut? I feel like they have elements of both modern and vintage design.

I love to look at emerald cuts but I don’t like wearing them. I prefer shapes with setting options that allow a normal wedding band to sit almost flush.

Asscher?

Anyways, regardless, if you don't love it I wouldn't keep it. Suxhca big and in many ways frivolous purchase, I'd want to automatically love it. Because I'd you don't why else buy it?

No, I’d really like to stay around 10mm or bigger so an asscher would be way out of the budget.

I have both a MRB and an AVC--I think it is good to have some variety in cuts for rings.

I love both of your rings! I feel like your BG MRB looks so much bigger on the hand than this cushion. Maybe that’s part of my issue. It could be that I haven’t worn a solitaire in years and really want to but it feels so much smaller than I thought it would. I only wear a 5 so my fingers aren’t gigantic.

My MRB is actually less than 10mm and my finger size is around a 6 so your antique cushion, in actuality, would look bigger on your hand. I think if you possibly halo it w/ a small donut than you will see a big difference in finger coverage. I think Misskittycat had a similar dilemma w/ her diamond recently and reset it into a halo.

I just broke out the calipers and I think I figured it out. I think because the distance between the shorter sides (not corner to corner) is 9.3-9.4mm my eyes are reading it as way smaller than it really is. Maybe I should stick with a round.

Stunning !
Whats the real grade of the stone M ? EGL ...

Hmm, that size might almost be worth the color trade off!

I’m no expert but it shows very little body color from the side so I would say GIA K, maybe L on a bad day. I think EGL was fairly close on this one.

You stick it in a fancy gigantic halo .. the diamond will be massive. This is one of the prettiest cushions.

The cut is very nice is it a Yoram F cut?

But I really wanted a solitaire!

Treasurehunter, I have no idea. I haven't seen anything about it being a newly cut stone. It was purchased from OWD by the consigner.

Here's the size comparison between the 4.00 ACC and 2.41 Transitional I've been wearing.

Fancies have personalities.

Sometimes one will catch your heart despite all the stats, etc. Sometimes one perfect on paper just doesn't do it for you.

I would pass.

The size whore in me really likes the 5ct! I’m on the fence about dropping that low in color though.

It doesn't sound like you are sold on this diamond so I think you should keep looking.

I did have the opportunity to see this diamond when Adam at OWD had it-it is very pretty, but it is definately warmer than a GIA K. I only know because I compared it to one.

It looks very pretty on your hand!

It's a very pretty stone but IMHO you are either a cushion person or an OEC person and you can still like both but most of us have a strong preference for one over the other. You might have a visual preference for OECs or for Transitionals (or both round shapes) rather than cushions and that is all it is. Alternatively as some have suggested you might prefer cushions that have more of a really bold maltese cross in the middle and are more like AVCs, or you might not like either. It is also an EGL graded stone which means it is lower than a J.

Ask Grace to find a killer OEC for you instead and swap them, and see if you like that better. I think sometimes we don't really understand what we love until we see and or roadtest a heap of different items. I know that things I have loved on paper I have gone "meah not so much IRL" and other things that should in theory be average I have gone "wow, that is amazing"..... genuine old cuts are like that, a bit of a mixed barrel.

It's not a matter of finding one that you can live with, but the one that you cannot live without!!!!

I really appreciate all the advice. I felt a little bit bad for not loving it because it really is an AMAZING diamond but it think it really must be a personal preference thing. I'm going to stick with rounds and see what we can find.

I have always loved that stone and have even considered purchasing it in the past. I'm one of those people who rarely "loves" anything immediately, especially old cuts because they are usually "imperfect" and I'm very critical. It takes me a few hours or a day or so to fully decide if a stone is for me. Part of the charm of old cuts is their quirks and "flaws". I suggest giving it a little more time to decide. I think a cushion that beautiful is extremely rare these days. Only you can decide which stone is perfect for you. Good luck in your decision. :)

see I'm the opposite. Given enough time i can love any well cut diamond, but its right when i see it and i think 8) 8) thats when i know theres something special about it

That M color OEC featured above is pretty shallow at 57% depth.

I am the same way, I need to have some time to get to know the personality of the stone. That AC is, in my opinion, one if the most beautifully cut ACs I have ever seen. Well cut, higher color ACs are hard to find, and one that size is even more rare. I would give it a day or two and get to know the stone before you make a final decision.

Yes me too, I'm like Niel, I can talk myself into living with anything but if I don't love it immediately then I I have found that reaction doesn't change over time. Having said that we are all different and there is no dispute it's a nice stone. The colour could be what is bugging you about it - it is way lower than a J. I'm guessing Grace will come back from JCK with some cool new things, so if you wait a few days and you still don't love it, it still might be worth seeing how you feel about OECs or other cuts instead.
