Hi everyone,
I decided to buy this 3ct Ruby 48F66372-9B17-41D7-B823-C9FD2295557C.jpegdiamond ring set in 18ct Rose Gold and .63 of H VS diamonds. The Valuation cert says it’s valued at over $12,000 Aud. My question is when you get rings valued would they always specify if it had been lead glass filled? This one doesn’t have anything mentioned about it. Surely valuers have the equipment to test for this don’t they?
Here are some pics….

Local mom and pop jewelers who write evaluation reports often don’t have the equipment or expertise to help you determine stone treatments so their evaluation is a best guess without this info provided to them. You need to send the ring to a reputable lab to determine the treatments, which will impact the value. I always halve a local appraisal value to get closer to the true value/retail price of an item as a starting point. Your ring is really pretty though!

Thanks yes the paperwork I have is what you would call a local appraisal.

It’s lovely!!!

If you want to know about lead glass, soak it in a bit of lemon juice or vinegar

If it’s glass filled, it will go completely nasty and be full of lines all over the surface the next day

BE you’ll need a lab for though!

Looks glowy and a nice hue but perhaps not super-gemmy.

Vendor "valuation certificates" are meaningless, imo. Something is worth what others will pay for it and so how is it valued at 2X (for example) the same day you bought it for X? Even a legitimate third-party appraisal is sus and you would need to specify if this is market value or replacement cost, etc. (huge difference).

You will need a report from a reputable lab on your continent. I love that they report the diamond size to the hundredth of a carat but not if the ruby is glass-filled.
