Hi everyone!

I''ve recently had a change of plans in how my FI and I were going to get married. Originally, we decided that we were going to elope in a tropical location, and I had a Nicole Miller gown picked out that was perfect for a beach wedding. However, as we started planning, different factors came into light that made us change our mind. So, we decided that we were going to do the "city hall" thing and then travel to London and Paris for two weeks. I had an agonizing week trying to decide if I would regret not wearing a "gown" and although I could wear one to "city hall", it just didn''t feel right to me. I decided that I was going to buy a really, really nice dress -- something that was sophisticated and chic, one that I could definitely wear to get married in, and our the two planned "romantic" dinners that we would like to do in each city.

I decided that I wanted to buy a dress in the same price range that I had set for myself for the Nicole Miller. I did some research, and was really drawn to this Lela Rose dress:
http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod53150198&parentId=cat15940732&masterId=cat12450742&index=1&cmCat=cat000000cat000001cat000009cat000019cat12450742cat15940732

It seemed like a really fitting dress to get eloped in, and definitely something that I could see myself breaking out for future special occassions.

I went to Neiman Marcus this afternoon to see if they had the dress and more importantly, to try it on, but neither NM''s in my area carried Lela Rose. However, as I was browsing, I saw this Marchesa gown:

They actually had the dress in my size, and it fit perfectly! I really fell in love with it, and consulted with the associate on having it shortened to a tea-length dress. We weren''t sure if it would change the gown stylistically (because of the pleated waist), but she had a seamstress stop by and pin it up for me. I put on my flats, and it looked Audrey Hepburn-ish. I felt really glamourous and pretty in it, so I purchased it on the spot because I was worried that the size would be sold out.

However, I think I am still going to order the Lela Rose and see how I feel about it. I hate doing things impulsively, and would like to at least compare the Lela Rose to the Marchesa. I know that they are very different, but I think in prinicipal, both feel like the right kind of elopement dress to me.

I will have to figure out a way to take pictures without my FI seeing it....hopefully later this evening or tomororw.

By the way...

I forgot to add that I would love everyone''s opinions on both. Is there one that you guys prefer over the other? Thanks!

I love the Marchesa. Stunning! It's far more special than the other one. You did the right thing.

Picture 3....a bad attempt at a back shot.

My plan is to shorten the dress...probably so that it hits a few inches below the knee.

Another vote for the Marchesa. This one has a ''WOW'' factor that the other one just doesn''t have in my opinion...

I think it would look great shortened as well..

I think the rose gown would not be very flattering to most body types and although nice it certainly isn''t audry heapburn. I love your current choice and from the look of it there is no reason it couldn''t be hemmed.
PS
I am so jelous, a city hall wedding and travel to Europe is what I wanted but it wasn''t in the cards.

I think the Marchesa is clearly the right choice :) It will look lovely shortened as well if you do go that route. :)

I actually love both of the dresses! I like the Lela one every-so-slightly more but I think that is just my own personal taste (I tend to prefer preppier looks and #1 seems so preppy.) I definitely think both dresses are very Audrey-ish! I really don''t think you can go wrong with either one. #2 looks awesome on you!! Definitely share pictures with us if you end up ordering the Lela one too, but really, either way you go will be great!

I think the Marchesa is just lovely - classic and elegant but with a twist

And it looks absolutely smashing on you

I can''t wait to see what it looks like shortened.

I also think its more wearable for future events than the Lela Rose, and, as IG said, more special and has more "pop" for lack of a better word.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Marchesa. It is classy, beautiful, and something that will not be out of style next year as the other one might. Besides, it is much more posh which makes me think it is also just the thing for night out in Paris and London. Good find!

Hands down for Marchesa! It looks perfect on you!

Thanks for the responses and lovely compliments!

I went on a wild-goose chase yesterday trying to find the Lela Rose. When I got home, I decided to order it from Neiman''s -- only to find out that the dress is a pre-order and with a target delivery date of April 7th! I''m not sure what I am going to do about that particular dress at this point, whether it will actually be in contention.

SuLi I like both dresses too. I think the Lela Rose doesn''t have the flare that that the Marchesa has. Also, when you cut the bottom length of the dress off, you could use the excess fabric to make yourself a shawl or wrap. My vote is for #2 the Marchesa.
