My best friend is graduating with her PhD in May. For the last year she has been planning to get a ring to symbolize that accomplishment. And for the last year her hubby has been saying, No! She can''t buy a ring for that! That''s too much money!

Well she was mad

and has been arguing with him on and off for the last year. And to be honest, I thought he was crazy to say "no" to somthing like that since they can easily afford it.

Well today my friend asked me to help her buy and ring. She didn''t care what he said, it was her choice. And she budgeted $1000, part of which she would use to buy the ring and part of it she would donate to an educational charity. I looked around a little and then sent her a link to some rings (thanks in part to help from the posters in SMTR), and she loved it.

This is what happened next, as told by my friend:

"I told him about it and he was all "I don''t agree with it, especially the charity part", and I was stubborn, and he was like "well, then wait until you get your first paycheque from a job," and I was like "what the hell??" and I was seriously mad. It''s my money too!

And then we realized that he thought I meant, like, a $6000 budget!! And when he realized it was $1000 total, he was fine with that.

Isn''t that funny how communication is sometimes? We''d been arguing for like a year!"

Too bad he didn''t think she meant like 20,000.00, and then would have been fine with the 6000.00.

That''s what I said, Ellen!

DD, My jewelry pieces all enter the house in a way similar to your friend's ring. The only difference is that there is no discussion about whether I can buy them because, according to my husband, we can never afford to buy anything. He doesn't have a clue what jewelry I have, although in the past when it was all insured he must have had some idea. He probably didn't, though, because he doesn't have any idea what size 1 carat or 2 carats is!

Deborah, that''s hilarious. I do all the finances in my family, so I could really do the same thing. I just say to hubby "I''m gonna spend X on diamonds" and he goes, "can we afford that?" and I say, "Um, yes!" Then I quietly decrease the amount of money that is transferred into our "mad money"/"randomd Spending money" accounts each month to make room for the purchase!

Too funny!

Right now I am a student intern for which I make NO money (I get to pay the school) which gets old quick (especially when you work 40+ hours), but on the weekends I work one shift for money (although not much) but that is my play money right now.

When I am finally out in the career field (goal is 6 months) I am going to try to work some overtime and that will be my play money

Hubby really has no concept of the cost of jewelry, and so to him everything is expensive

I hope to be in charge of our finances at some point too.

Haha, it is a belssing and a curse. I''m in charge because I am good at making spread sheets and planning and saving and making budgets. DH on the other hand cannot be trusted with any money or a credit card! He agrees, btw. It works for us because he agrees to my rules about spending and likes feeling like we are being fiscally responsible.

Hubby has been doing it only because while I was going through the first part of school I was only home on the weekends, so it maked more sense for him to do it (and he isn''t bad at it). He does all the spreadsheets. Before I went "away" for school I was in charge of the budget. Guess we''ll see.
