I just came home from visiting one of my best friends at the hospital. She has a pituitary tumor which is producing fluid and creating pressure on her brain and optic nerve. They will probably decide to operate to remove the tumor on Monday. I am so worried for her.

HOT, I'm sorry your friend is going through a rough time right now. I wanted to give you a little reassurance, though, if I may. My mother had a pituitary tumor removed back in the early 80s. It wasn't an easy surgery, but she did really well. My mom's tumor was an adenoma (not cancerous), but she did have to go through 5 weeks of radiation, just to be assured that the tumor did not return. That was a rough time for her, but again, she did really well and had no lasting effects from the radiation. The pituitary gland is the "master" gland of the body, and as such, it controls all other glands (adrenal, thyroid, etc.). After surgery, my mom had to take a medication to stimulate the adrenal glands, but she didn't have to take that forever. She did have to take synthroid and hydrocortone for the rest of her life, but that was no big deal at all.

I know you are worried sick about your friend, I hope everything will work out just as well for her as it did for my mom.

I'm on a clear liquid diet today... apple juice, jello, chicken broth, repeat.

Which will be followed by a day or two of brat diet - bananas, rice, applesause, toast.

And if that doesn't resolve things, it'll be a month of bland diet - no coffee, tea, alcohol, chocolate, mint, tomatoes, deep fried foods... through Thanksgiving and beyond :(( .

*sigh*

Awwww VRB that stinks! I hope steak is on the menu very soon. :wavey:

Hi Isaku! :wavey: That made me laugh - and salivate! I do believe the bland diet accommodates steak, so now that you've planted the seed... :lickout: :naughty:

Meanwhile, I'm really looking forward to some more yummy red jello! :wink2:

Thank you so much Okie girl. It really is reassuring. I hope she is brave enough to go ahead with the surgery, as terrifying as it is for her. The Drs are worried about her losing her sight since pressure is building up on the optic nerve. I just hope she makes the right decision before it is too late.

Thanks again :))

My husband shaved off his Movember moustache this morning. It was beyond scruffy and was grey and black :(( . All the hairs were sticking straight out with no softening in sight.

He had to really pucker up to get a quick kiss, but I really preferred to kiss his neck.

Now he looks wonderful again :appl: so we've been playing kissy face all day

You're so welcome, HOT, I'm glad my story helped a little bit. I'm sure it is terrifying for her. I'm sure she has great doctors who will take wonderful care of her, but still...pretty darn scary. Oddly enough, after my mother's surgery, I've known several other people with pituitary tumors, and all of them had excellent outcomes. You tell your friend that a stranger halfway around the world (for some reason, I'm thinking you're in Australia?) is thinking about her, and KNOWS that she can do this!

Thanks Okie! Yes we are in Western Australia. I will be sure to tell her about your mum and you thinking of her. :wavey:

How come only food that's bad for you tastes good?

(As Dee slinks off into the kitchen for a piece of left over pizza from the company lunch... :lickout: )

DH is surprising me with a trip to Palm Springs early next year. Well, It was supposed to be a surprise, but the travel agency goofed and called me to ask about flights. So I told DH he has to come up with another surprise.

What a nice surprise, and now something to look forward to.

The ILs got a second dog from their shelter a few months ago. Her name is Ruby, I think she's part shepherd but no one knows, she's four-ish and uses a king-size comforter as a blankie (having long since ripped out the stuffing ::) )

Turns out she wasn't quite as spayed as the vet said she was though. Apparently there are now ten Ruby puppies.

Oh NO! That's terrible. :nono:
The shelter should have known better. I wonder how their vet didn't catch that when they first took her home??
OY. What are their plans for Ruby and her pups?

Unbelievable, right? They even took her in a second time because there were some concerns with her behaviour. I fail to understand how a vet could possibly miss something like this!

No plans for the puppies that I know of. We're thinking of taking one, but Mina and Alex have finally come to terms with each other and Mina's finally back to her old self and I really don't want to disrupt that. I'm sure we'll be helping them look for homes

Man, that is a bad situation. I would get a new vet ASAP!

If you're on Facebook you should search for local rescues that help rehome or find fosters. The networking people do is unbelievable, and with that many puppies you're going to need to reach out to a lot of people to find all of them homes.

Gosh, I'm so sorry. If they decide they can't handle it, that's totally understandable. Hopefully they can find a local rescue group who can help them in that case. TEN puppies--YIKES!!!!

What! How How How can they miss that! Sheesh! Well, on the plus side I'm sure those puppies are just darling!!! Goodness, the handful they're gonna be before you can get them adopted to good families!

Mary poppins and charmed one thank you.

There hasn't been a lot of progress. They are going to operate to remove the tumor, but they are still waiting on a date and for the surgical team to figure out a plan. The waiting is making me crazy, I can only imagine what it is like for her.

HOT, I am sorry your friend is going through such a scary time. Lots and lots of good vibes and dust for her and her entire surgical team.

I have a bit more to the story now - the shelter was a no-kill shelter that got her from another shelter the day before she was due to be put down (grain allergy + too many other dogs = ...) her files said that she was fixed, and apparently checking females is pretty invasive? In any case on the second visit the vet thought there was a good chance *something* was up, and had scheduled xrays and bloodwork for the following week, so they went home hoping it was just puppies... then they went out for the evening and when they came home, well, no need for the tests!

Still gross negligence on the vet's part IMO.

The FB idea is a really good one, thank you! I don't have my own but DH does, I'll definitely talk to him when he gets home tomorrow! I'm glad you mentioned it, I honestly hadn't thought of it. They have five 'tentatives', three of which are 'probablies', they're going to keep one, and we might take one. That still leaves 4-6 at minimum, so...

They're SO. CUTE. I don't want to post their pics but we might go down to see them this weekend, and I'll be sure to take lots of my own if we do!!
