She has a pituitary tumor which is producing fluid and creating pressure on her brain and optic nerve. They will probably decide to operate to remove the tumor on Monday. I am so worried for her.
HOT, I'm sorry your friend is going through a rough time right now. I wanted to give you a little reassurance, though, if I may. My mother had a pituitary tumor removed back in the early 80s. It wasn't an easy surgery, but she did really well. My mom's tumor was an adenoma (not cancerous), but she did have to go through 5 weeks of radiation, just to be assured that the tumor did not return. That was a rough time for her, but again, she did really well and had no lasting effects from the radiation. The pituitary gland is the "master" gland of the body, and as such, it controls all other glands (adrenal, thyroid, etc.). After surgery, my mom had to take a medication to stimulate the adrenal glands, but she didn't have to take that forever. She did have to take synthroid and hydrocortone for the rest of her life, but that was no big deal at all.
I know you are worried sick about your friend, I hope everything will work out just as well for her as it did for my mom.
