I start my interpreting job at the college tomorrow, and my stomach is in knots I''m so nervous! Prayers needed!

I''m nervous I''ll freeze... I''m nervous I won''t understand the student''s Sign Language... I''m nervous the professor will put me on the spot somehow (lol, I almost typed "spit" instead of "spot" but that''s what it feels like I can expect!)... I''m nervous the professor will talk so fast or keep going off topic I won''t be able to interpret all of it clearly... I''m nervous I''ll say something stupid/embarassing (won''t be the first time!)... I''m nervous the student or professor will say, "I don''t want her as an interpreter"... I''m just nervous, can ya tell?

I need some pixie dust sprinkled on my hands and mouth and brain!

Bucket of Dust launched and heading your way!!

Sera -- No worries! They picked you as the successful candidate. You will be fantastic!
Have a phenomenal first day!

Good luck!!

Well, I''m back! Butterflies are still here as is the awkwardness, but I survived. One of the students'' signing is very fast and very difficult to understand! I''m hoping and praying I''ll be able to follow!

Thanks for the support, everyone.

Glad you made it through, okay. I''m sure it''ll be a breeze once you get used to their sigining!

Aw... thanks everyone. Believe me, I still need the luck!

I''m so worried still that I''m feeling like I want to tell them I can''t do it! I''m so nervous that I will not understand and interpret something so embarassingly random lol (not like I''ve done that before!

lol... you would not believe some of the mistakes I''ve made!).

The job is about the students, so I need to do it well... I can''t take time away from the class by making mistakes or asking them to slow down (read: dumb down) the signing for me. I guess I didn''t mention that the other hearing students in the class ALL sign well and a few of them ARE interpreters. Intimidated much?

Actually, they seem like a great class... but still!

My stomach has been in knots all day. Luckily, I only do this two nights a week for two separate classes (and different students).

I rEEEEEally hope everything just "clicks," yanno?

That is high pressure! I bet you''ll be just fine after a week or two, though. I''m sure they''ll be patient with you until then, too!

P.S. Totally obvious and you may already be doing it, but have you tried "interpreting" all your friends and family conversations when you''re not at work? It could get you used to being quick with your hands and get you to not be so nervous.

Yeah... and talk radio is really good... I even sometimes try Spanish music (Reggaeton) as the challenge of 3 languages is good practice (makes two seem not so bad lol). I also try some practice with some Sign Language online (they have quizzes and lectures, etc). Also, the church I go to has a large Deaf group, so I get practice on Sundays.
