I STRONGLY support transgender people's existence and freedoms ... and ...

Transgender Fact Checker For John Oliver Showed Obvious Bias, Purposely Misrepresented Information

The fact-checker for Last Week Tonight is a trans-identifying male named DM "Dee" Brent.

In other words, the person tasked with verifying whether women’s concerns about fairness and safety are "based in fact" is someone with a personal stake in denying those concerns altogether. That's like hiring a lobbyist for Big Tobacco to fact-check a segment on lung cancer.”

So now trans people cannot be hired in media, lest, your bias?

One of these claims just flat out agrees with him (agreeing with them about the UN report), one of them doesn't even disagree they are pulling from a site anyone can submit an complaint to. None of this disputes people submitting complaints about being beat in a ***fun run or chess match*** by a supposed (not even confirmed) trans person.

This episode didn't even get into the organization that is paying $5k to some of these people refusing to fight trans athletes.

Stephanie Turner, the female fencer who refused to fight a trans fencer (after having the week prior fought in mixed foils against cis men), was paid $5,000 by an anti-trans organization. She isn't protesting men in womens sports, she's cashing out on far right hate-ology.

Oliver has proven himself a VERY unreliable source. He makes up statistics to fit his narrative.
"No wonder the episode felt more like an activist manifesto than a balanced discussion"
He is also being sued for deliberately misrepresenting "facts"
He has a history of making up things and calling them facts and it all speaks for itself if anyone cares to do the research

No it’s not the same. A lobbyist chose to be a lobbyist as a vocation. Being trans is an identity. Would people not trust me to report on Chinese related issues because I was born in China? Obviously I’d have skin in the game (pun intended) and so for the sake of optics might be asked to divest myself, but I’d be insulted at the implication. I’m more critical of Chinese government than most Chinese people I’ve met there. Can I not be trusted to research health care disparity in women because I’m a woman? My Jewish partner can’t be factual about antisemitism by presumption? The idea that a person cannot be fair because the topic affects them, and should be assumed to be unfair if they research or talk about it is very dangerous.

Wow. Haven't logged in here in a while. Nothing like two marginalised groups - women and trans people - being encouraged to tear each other apart to take the focus off an administration publicly aiming to trample the rights of everyone other than white men.

@missy
Nice to see you again! I do, think in fairness, you should attribute that quote, which is from OutKick, founded by Clay Travis and owned by Fox News, so their perspective could easily be considered just as conflicted/biased as a trans researcher's.

Off to look at bling :)

Hi Jaaron. Nice to see you. Enjoy the bling

I think the trans athletes issue is nuanced and should have room for discussion. What I don’t like is that some people are using it as a way to vilify trans people as a whole because it’s the best angle since presumably gender segregated sports exist for a reason (there’s also segregated chess leagues fun fact). But you can tell the folks who rally against trans athletes in sports often aren’t respectful, and will misgender people involved constantly. Riley Gaines and similar athletes don’t say “it’s unfair to compete against a trans woman”, they often say things like “I shouldn’t have to compete against a man” or “no men in women’s sports!” They aren’t just against trans women competing in sports, they’re against the recognition of trans women as valid at all. Or “protect our girls” which implies that trans women cause harm/violence.

I think folks who truly are allies with trans people but don’t support them in competitive sports should be the first to call this out since it undermines the legitimacy of any objective science based conversations or debates.

I support people being whoever they are. 100%
I don’t support biological men competing against biological women
It is complicated and there are no completely fair answers for all sadly

Oliver has manipulated data on other occasions. Just informing those who want to know. He’s biased.

Ok. That’s not the part of your statement I was responding to though?

He makes up statistics? Or do you make up lies about him? He usually cites all of his stats, it's pretty easy to track down. You are taking your talking points from an opinion piece, and apparently a pretty anti-trans opinion at that. Not very unbiased!

He’s hardly the poster child for the truth. Believe whatever you want. Anyone who cares can easily search

Omg, I looked up the lawsuit against John Oliver and it's hilarious. He's not twisting anything. A US healthcare exec is suing because he took a quote out of context in his Medicaid episode.
US healthcare exec is quoted on the show as saying: "People have bowel movements every day where they don’t completely clean themselves, and we don’t fuss over [them] too much. People are allowed to be dirty … You know, I would allow him to be a little dirty for a couple of days.” but they didn't like that being brought up again

He left out some of the quote before and after. It's not a 5 hour show, he can't play the whole trial lol. Here is the full quote

“In certain cases, yes, with the patient with significant comorbidities, you would want to have someone wiping them and getting the feces off. But like I said, people have bowel movements every day where they don’t completely clean themselves and we don’t fuss over too much. People are allowed to be dirty. It’s when the dirty and the feces and the urine interfere with, you know, medical safety, like in someone who has concomitant comorbidities that you worry, but not in this specific case. I would allow him to be a little dirty for a couple days.

He said all of the words. He said it was fine for this person with severe disabilities to be uncared for days on end.

Surprised to see anyone would be on the side of the billionaire healthcare execs denying care for disabled people, but somehow still not.

He has a history of twisting facts to make them work for him

One example

There are more if you care to search but I can’t link due to rules here

By the way telephone what do you think Hamas does to transgender individuals?
I’m 100% for everyone’s rights. I believe we should all be true to who we are and I completely believe many were born in the wrong body and they should have the freedom to be who they are. Do you think Hamas feels the same? I ask because you defend them occasionally and just wondering. No sarcasm on my part. Just a genuine question. I don’t understand anyone supporting Hamas but open to hearing different perspectives

Another thread you gotta turn into the israel/palestine conflict   Girl, youre like a dog with a bone. Keep it to the proper thread. Wouldn't want to hear about all the war crimes being committed - the thousands of healthcare workers, journalists and children being murdered daily by the IDF

I think it is germane to a thread on transgender rights. Which I completely support
I am just wondering what you think of those who dont support their rights? Hamas is one BIG example
This is a thread about transgender isn't it?

And remind me telephone...Who started this war? What war doesn't have causalities? Who can end this war tomorrow by releasing the hostages and surrendering? And anyone who believes Hamas' statistics of causalities needs to examine their bellef system

Lol ok. 15 murdered paramedics dumped in a hole.

‘What was their crime?’ Families tell of shock over IDF killing of Gaza paramedics

“There were marks from restraints on Saleh’s wrists where the Israeli army had bound him. His fingers were also broken,” he said. Two other witnesses have told the Guardian that some of the victims had had their hands or feet bound.
“The gunshot wounds were clear shots to the chest and his wrist. It looked like he had raised his hand to shield himself, and the bullets went through his hand into his chest and out of his back. There were more than four bullets, all in the chest and heart area.

"The fact that 1200 people were brutally murdered, mutilated, burned, raped and desecrated by Hamas terrorists, and that 240 people were abducted from their homes and taken hostage inside Gaza, is undeniable and incontrovertible. "

"It has been especially alarming to hear some question Hamas’ documented widespread perpetration of sexual violence against both women and men, many of whom were killed on October 7. "

"part, of the evidence for these atrocities comes from Hamas itself which proudly shared self-filmed videos of terrorists gleefully celebrating murders, humiliations and seizing innocents as hostages. Others come from videos from security cameras, survivors and rescuers, photos of blood-streaked homes and victims, and testimony of hundreds of civilians who spent hours hiding from Hamas terrorists, lost relatives, or saw their friends taken hostage. "

No LOL from me
This is a tragedy beyond comprehension

Keep on topic.

I can’t find the story- but I read of a state legislature where they’ve introduced legislation allowing administrators to check genitalia of children to make sure they’re conforming to traditional sexual identity.
Wow.
Imagine explaining that to a first grader….
But let’s focus on the sports issues.

Because of their interpretation of their holy texts. We're little better, we're trying to erase their existence in different ways that are also inhumane. If I could rid the world of one scourge, it would be the R word.

I couldn't find anything about that. In 2022 Ohio tried (and failed) to pass HB 151 that "...is a badly designed effort to exclude transgender students from sports teams by requiring any student, at any time, to submit to an unwanted inspection of their internal and external reproductive anatomy." https://ohiohouse.gov/news/democrat...nital-exams-to-play-high-school-sports-110422

I wouldn't be surprised to find that there are similar efforts currently afoot. This fixation on people's genitals by certain groups is icky.

None of the people drafting that ridiculous bill apparently stopped to consider the numbers of teachers/admins/coaches who have made headlines for pedophilia and/or sexual abuse of HS kids. Those sickos would be salivating at the chance to "inspect" kids' genitalia.
