Ideas for elongated green beryl setting?

Modern and sleek, yet classic. I love it!

I love the 2nd ring you posted in your original post. It frames that gorgeous stone perfectly!!! Beautiful stone!!!

I’d you can find my “how to set my aqua” idea thread, I have plenty of examples of ideas.

I don’t like it with colored side stones. I think it’s gorgeous on its own or, of course, with diamonds.

Have been thinking about setting this 8.6 ct green beryl

She is a big one, as you can see from this shot taken while I was playing with the stone

Icy, I see your beautiful beryl is 8.6ct, but I can't find the mm dimensions. :mrgreen2:

Some ideas from browsing the internet...

Am usually a halo person but I’m not sure if this stone is too big for a halo... but then I also feel like some protection is needed since beryl is a ‘soft’ stone.

Anyone has any ideas or suggestions? TIA!

They are all gorgeous :lickout::kiss2:

I am in love with it. I can’t wait to see the finished project. It’s such a nice size that it would stand alone beautifully as a solitaire. The antique settings you referenced are all gorgeous.

Excuse me, I need to leave now to go and wipe the drool off my chin. So much lovely eye-candy in this thread in addition to your dreamy green Beryl.

Thanks! It’s quite different from my other cs rings personality wise... and definitely my biggest 8)

Thank you! Hope to have a good setting to complement the stone.

Yeah I think it will do well in a Art Deco setting with diamonds. Something quite classic looking I think, and timeless.

Here they are, approx 15.5x9.5

Found the @whitewave aqua thread and adding the ideas that I like

Yoram brought up the Oppenheimer Blue:

I have rounds surrounding my vintage aqua ring. It’s hard to see, but they’re in elevated channels. I’d take more pics but it’s at the bank. I upload lots of old pics on this board. Just an idea. Oh by the way for the Oppenheimer blue you posted above, they used one of my favorite Art Deco designers, Raymond Yard, for their gems. You can look up that designer for aqua, emerald, and other rectangular stines, and get a plethora if ideas.

The following are pretty pics of aqua rings that may or may not be inspiration for my ring. I just wanted to add them here:

My Aqua from Jeff White, can't recall the stats, however, it is about 6ct, and he has already cut two Morganite traps for the setting I have in mind.
Still to be set.

Ok definitely towards a classic looking ring, with no round diamonds to break up the lines... current favs but leaning towards a mix of the first 3

My vote is definitely for an Art Deco style!! Gotta emphasize that shape :kiss2: I had this idea saved for my gray spinel, which is way smaller than your stone, but love these proportions:

If I would like to set with a pair of moissy traps, what size traps should I be looking at so that the proportions look right? The beryl measures approx 15.5x9.5mm

Do you think 1/3 the length will work? Ie traps with 5 mm on the longest side

Try 9.58mm in total or 5.92mm for the longest side of the traps. Maybe draw it up to scale and see how it looks and compare the two different lengths. I just quickly jumped on to a calculator site for the Golden Rectangle which uses the Golden Mean.

Very crude 2D drawing showing 3 different trap sizes, drawn to scale, all the same width at 35mm, from top down 60mm, 75mm, and 90mm.

EC and Traps Proportions.JPG

Bear in mind this is a 2D drawing, therefore, the traps would be wider before they are set.

To me personally, I prefer the one in the middle.

Nice drawing DK! Are you an engineer? :mrgreen2:

To me the bottom traps seem too big. Tough choice between middle and top, but I'm leaning towards the top, maybe in between the two?

I opted for pharmaceutical engineering that included technical drawing as an option in my third year at uni. ;)2

The software I used is MS Visio, and having been using it since the 90s for flow charting for work.

Out of work, I use it to plan the layout of kitchens, gardens, van etc...

Interesting. I like the middle one which is in between the two 'Golden Ratio' numbers. The beryl itself has been cut to Golden Ratio/Rectangle proportions.

Thanks a lot @Yelena and @dk168! Looking at available moissy options now 8)

@dk168 how do you get the shapes to be the right size using Visio? So impressed by your skill and I want to learn too

In Visio, one can customise the size of the shapes and the shapes themselves too.

For the Beryl itself, I used the Octagon shape, specifying the length and width based on your measurements, then modified the size of the corners individually until the overall shape resembles your stone.

For the traps, it was based on trial and error, pure fluke with no skill involved.

Oh! No wonder. I was wondering how come I cannot find the shape :lol-2:

Thanks!

As they say, when you know, you know!

I could have drawn it in its entirely, then I saw the Octagon shape and thought I could modify it.

You can modify any shapes by selecting the different types of drawing tools:

Visio_Change_Shape.JPG

One can change a rectangle to a triangle by selecting the line or pencil tool and delete one of the sides, great fun (I am extremely sad, I know!). :lol-2:

I am so excited about this gorgeous stone and the future setting, following this thread. @dk168 thank you for the visio suggestion, I am going to try that! I have been using powerpoint for my design drawings but it's not as ideal for setting exact measurements.

Visio is fine for a rough drawing for ideas in 2D. I can't get my head around using it for 3D drawings, so I am sticking with what I know.

I love that you set it with simple (but good sized!) diamond traps, and went with double claw prongs, which are a must for a stone of that size. It's a winner! Enjoy!!

@Mreader O/T Your cat has the sweetest little black heart nose... and I love his/her "loaf" position in your profile pic. Makes me smile every time!

Oh man I LOVE that.
Thank you!

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! Are you planning to set your stones soon?

The setting outlines and emphasizes the elongated shape elegantly.
Thank you! Simple setting as the stone is already so big (ok plus let’s be honest at current prices the big halos I like are prohibitive even if I think I can swing their size)…
