hi! I think this may be my first post in the colored stones area!

I''m just starting to get ideas together for a ring I want to buy next fall. This will be for a big b-day - a gift from DH but he wants me to choose exactly what I want. I want to make sure it''s a timeless design that I will have for years. With metal prices the way they are, I am on the prowl for good deals on the setting and would buy it now if the right thing came along at the right price!

The ring I have in mind is a blue sapphire RHR. My total budget is $3000. I prefer platinum, but unless I got really lucky that would be my whole budget - so white gold or palladium is my most likely choice. Since my e-ring is a round solitaire, I''d like to do something different for the sapphire. I''m thinking asscher, cushion, or oval. There are three styles of setting that I like: dainty halo, more substantial halo (tiff legacy style), or 3 stone.

Ideally the stone would be about a carat (if haloed) or larger, if 3 stone.

I''d love to hear your idea about how to make this happen in my budget, and also to hear recommendations about vendors.

One of my distant family members is in the gemstone business, so I have asked him to let me know about his sapphire inventory. I assume he would give me a good price so that might help keep costs down for the stone, and more for the setting. If he doesn''t have exactly what I''m looking for, I figured I''d get the sapphire from The Natural Sapphire Company, Simply Sapphires, Jeff White, or work with Wink, Whiteflash, James Allen or Pearlmans or another PS vendor to see about sourcing one for me. Ideally I''d love to get sapphire and setting from the same place.

I have shopped via internet before and had good experiences. My only hesitation with buying the sapphire online is that it''s so hard to see the color via computer screen.

I''ll post some of the setting styles that I like.

Thanks for your feedback and ideas!

Here is the first one, the Princess Grace by Vatche, photo from Excel Diamonds website. They are another vendor I''d consider using. They also have their own Legacy inspired ring which would be a good option. The setting is approx $2000 depending on metal and stone size. Anybody bought a colored stone from Excel/Superbcert?

this pic is from thenaturalsapphirecompany.com. This is the thin halo style. I love it! This particular ring is out of budget though but I''m sure they could make one with a different stone. Anyone have good or bad experiences with their settings specifically?

the nsc ring - thinner halo and band than the legacy inspired style

although this is "reserved" maybe it is not sold.... looks nice and is in the price range + the setting? (halo)...
I also like the three stone idea too...

Good luck... What a fun project! Congrats on the big bday!

sorry to jump around, here is the legacy inspired setting from excel diamonds - could be made with virtually any shape sapphire, shown with asscher diamond, so pretty. Sometimes it is hard to compare the diamond ring pics and try to visualize with the sapphire in it!

some of the beverley k settings really speak to me, and some of them are very affordable (relatively speaking of course) - this one seems to be under $1000. I have seen a few of the bev k settings in person and was very impressed with the quality. This photo is from pearlmans. I'd love to order something from them finally - I have bugged them with so many questions and they have always been super nice. Some of the bev k settings seem a bit too ornate for me (and especially for DH's taste, he likes it simple) but some of them might be just perfect.

OK, I'm not feeling too inspired by the 3 stone pics I'm finding at the moment, but I am thinking either oval sapph with oval diamonds, emerald cut sapphs with diamonds, oval or cushion sapph with baguettes, asscher with asscher diamonds, or something with traps or bullets (need to look into this more).

About the only 3 stone that I am not considering is round sapphire w/ round diamonds - I want something different.

I'm also not sure if I want to do a medium blue sapphire or a lighter blue. I really like Neatfreak's lighter blue because you can see the steps in the asscher cut.

I don't want a very dark blue sapphire like I see often in local stores, because I don't feel like you can see the sparkle or the facets as much. I saw some beautiful stones at a recent gem show that amazed me - I had never seen sapphires sparkle so much before.

Do you guys think that the halo style is too trendy? I know it is very popular right now, but it has also been around a long time (in a good way).

If I do a pave setting I really want a good quality one so I will have less worry about stones falling out. Would love to hear people's experiences with the brands/companies I have mentioned.

What do you all think about heat treated vs natural?

OK, thanks so much for your ideas and feedback!!!!!

Thank you luvwhitediamonds! That is a pretty stone and a new web site for me to explore!

do you like this setting?

I know what you mean about neatfreaks stone -- it''s so beautiful, and unique... and the facets will help with the "sparkle factor"...

oh, sorry for so many posts but I am all over the place.

I neglected to mention, another style I like is the band style ring, either eternity or half eternity. This would also be less expensive (more like in the $1500 range for the whole ring.) I have a really hard time spending money on myself, even though DH is fully in support, and so I guess I like the idea of spending less and I really do like this style. Plus I could stack it with a thin eternity band that I already have. So, this is "plan b" I guess.

I do like split shanks, but DH doesn''t like them as much as he likes the other styles. Thanks for the link though - very pretty ring!

What about this the NSC has and you have options with it also and it is within budget. I dont'' know how the quality of the stone is the pictures are so hard to judge.

Last one sorry but I kind of like it. I am planning a project just like this for my anniversary. I have been looking all over but the halo''s which I love are up there in price!

It is not, that is one of the 2 I had sent out a month or so ago....the site has not been updated since than...not too sure what is going on.

Thank you guys for posting! Wen, the NSC does have a lot of nice options within budget! And, it appears you can make up any combination of setting and stone, which is great. I would love to hear if anyone has seen their settings in person and can vouch for the workmanship and quality of the melee?

Tradergirl, thanks for posting! I don''t use ebay anymore though. After a few bad transactions, I decided it isn''t worth it. Thanks for the idea anyway though!

Hm, that is strange that they have not updated their site. Thank you for letting me know! Did you like it?

I recently purchased an oval yellow sapphire from NSC (loooooove it). Steve Bliss is a crack-up, and quite helpful. I''m currently saving up for a setting within a limited budget (as close to $1000 as possible, although there''s a little bit of wiggle room). My original idea was the Whiteflash Micropave Legato set east west, but then I came across some gorgeous Beverly K halo rings on the Pearlman''s site. I''m trying to decide between the first two rings on this page (provided that customizing for an oval doesn''t bump the price up too much). They might fit what you''re looking for...?

As far as 3 stone rings, I love half moons with ovals, and tapered baguettes with asschers/EC''s. Cushions I seem to prefer halo''d for some reason.

... I really need to stop this addiction to jewelry!

I totally vote for the facets sapphire and diamond eternity band! With quite a bit of money left over, you could also do a solid sapphire "maternity ring" from them and stack them both with your diamond eternity. Very versatile imo.

It was not my favorate. I ended veiwing 2. That one had a really nice color during the day and was a great tone, medium-dark but still transparent. But at night, it had no sparkle...and I really want sparkle. I posed pics of that one and a smaller one that was the same color, a bid more saturation, and more sparkle side by side. I put the link here. In real life the are both a bit more purple. I have found that the more pure blue the sapphire is the more expensive. I personally like the purple overtones.

Work has taken over my life right now but I hope to restart my search in a couple weeks :-). I am interested in seeing what you come up with because I think that me and you have similar tastes.

Parrottulips, I can't wait to see what setting you get for your sapphire! Thanks for the good recommendation on NSC. I am glad you had a good experience. Thanks too for the bevK link - it's funny that is exactly where I got that bevK photo that I posted above. I like the first, second, and third on that page a lot. Their quality is so great and it seems like you get a lot for the money. They have a lot of nice looking halo styles. Maybe I would ask if they could send me a few so I could compare. It's hard to tell the differences (especially in proportions) from the pics, isn't it? I share you opinion about 3 stone combinations. I think we must have similar taste!

Diamondseeker and LoveWhiteDiamonds, there is a similar setting at whiteflash too - the allegra in D. It is really pretty! I may have to revisit the idea of the split shank. I do really like it.

Oobiecoo, isn't that eternity band awesome? I love the look of diamonds and sapphires together, if you couldn't already tell! If it doesn't happen for this b-day, I think the eternity band would be a great idea for a push present if DH and I ever get around to having some kids... I hope to have one of those suckers on my hand sooner or later.

Ltlfirecracker, I want sparkle too. I like the purple overtones as well! It is hard to assess the amount of sparkle and even the exact color in photos. I can't wait to see what you end up with and hearing about your process!

So, my idea at the moment is to go with the Whiteflash halo setting (bezel) - sorry cannot post pic right now. Several PS'ers have it, including Shay, for their diamonds, and what a pretty setting! It is about $1500 in WG, leaving me a nice budget for a sapphire. The only thing is, it would be a round sapphire, and I was thinking a different shape, so who knows. My b-day isn't until the fall, but I'm afraid metal prices will keep going up so I'm thinking about getting it sooner. Although, would it just kill me to have the ring sitting around for all those months?! I feel a little silly looking around this early, but since this will be my FOREVER sapphire RHR, I want to make sure that I think it through really well and do all my homework so I make sure to get exactly what I want. Plus, it's fun to think about!

Thanks everyone for the ideas!! I know I'll be back with specific questions on stones/etc when I am actually ready to buy.
