IGI NYC appraiser

Hi,

I went there to appraise an fcd. They did not seem to understand what they were looking at. A round yellow fcd. GIA great color.
I dont put much into appraised value, as its many times just a an over the top number that makes you feel good about your purchase.
But really needed for insurance. They were so off on the appraisal, yes maybe I way overpaid, but after a bit of more intense questioning, they looked re-looked, called a few people and bot the value up to my purchase price. What the ? how do you have faith in that ?
ok, they said they dont see these often, or basically havent seen one in a long long time and because of cut, its rare, low supply , hard to find comparables, but really I expected better. A bit frustrated being there, didnt expect such an empty experience. Any suggestions for
a better appraisal ?

I am sorry you had a poor experience. As you've noticed, some appraisers are better than others. Since they did such a poor job, can they discount the fee or do something to make up for it? I would not trust their appraisal to be fair and accurate after reading what your wrote.

These were pulled up by the Pricescope Resource but I would guess that they might be more biased towards colourless diamonds. I am not familiar with businesses in the NYC area.

Thanks chrono. I guess the nature of what I bot isnt helping. If I bot a yellow cushion cut where there are many more comparables, it would be less of a problem.

I am curious but why can you not insure it for the amount you bought it for? The GIA lab report should be sufficient as to its lack of treatment and colour quality. The insurance company will either pay you what they believe they can replace it for (usually much less than it would cost a consumer) or find a comparable FCD (based on your GIA lab report).
