I don’t post that often but my favorite part of Pricescope is reading your engagement stories (oh, and seeing everyone’s beautiful rings) so here’s my story! We actually got engaged on May 17 but everything’s been so busy that I’m just now getting to posting!
A little background first:
My fiancé and I went to college together but we didn’t really know each other there, though we shared a lot of friends. We got to know each other when two of our best friends got married back in 2003 and we had crushes on each other then, but we lived in different cities and it didn’t make sense to try to start dating at the time. I always thought about him and wondered what life would be like with him, and it turns out that he was thinking the same thing. Fast forward to 2006 when another set of friends were getting married. We met up for the first time in years at their rehearsal dinner and have been together ever since. For the past two years we’ve been dating long-distance with me in DC and him mostly in SoCal.
We’ve been talking about getting engaged since about New Year’s and decided that he would propose sometime this summer. I’m moving to CA to be with him in September and I wanted to be engaged before I made that leap, so sometime this summer made sense and I was expecting the proposal in July, maaaaybe June. We looked at rings together in February and I showed him my two favorite styles that I had picked out during several ring shopping expeditions with girlfriends. One was a Ritani setting with a super skinny pave band and a row of diamonds around the basket (looks like the Endless Love setting from the top but without a halo) and the other was a Memoire ring with a prong-set eternity band.
Now for the story:
I was out visiting my fiancé in CA the weekend before we got engaged and was kind of bummed, thinking that we wouldn’t get engaged for several more months (LIW-itis had definitely set in!). I was hoping that he would surprise me and do it earlier than I thought, but since we’re long-distance there were only so many times he could do it during our upcoming trips before I move. But we still had a great weekend and I was excited that I would see him in only two weeks when we were meeting friends in Napa (he already said he wouldn’t propose on that trip with all our friends there so I knew it wouldn’t happen then).
So the weekend after I saw him in California I was out shopping and enjoying a gorgeous day in DC. I was talking to FI on and off but had to keep getting off the phone because I was trying things on. I’m a super efficient shopper and can tell quickly whether there’s anything I like in stores, so I got though all the stores I wanted to go to in Gtown pretty fast and moved onto Old Town Alexandria. I go to Old Town to roam around anytime the weather is nice – it is my favorite area of DC. I called FI again when I got to Old Town and again was running from store to store and FI was having trouble keeping up with where I was (unbeknownst to me at the time). I finished with my shopping and was on my way to Starbucks to pick something up before I went home. At his point, FI and I were on the phone but not really saying anything so I said why don’t we just talk later. He said well how about we just talk in person right now – meet me at Starbucks. Now I hadn’t said anything about going to Starbucks so I looked around to see if he was watching me (he wasn’t) because that was a little weird. It turned out to be a coincidence that I happened to be across the street from Starbucks at the time, and also a coincidence that I happened to be in Old Town where he planned to propose anyway! I thought he was joking because sometimes when we miss each other we’ll joke around and say why don’t we meet for dinner tonight or I’m lonely, come over. When it became clear he wasn’t joking I got really excited because why else would he show up in DC unannounced when I had just been in CA last week?! In a couple of minutes, FI did show up at Starbucks and he said I had such a confused look on my face. I wanted to know how he pulled off flying across the country without me knowing it! He took me down to the waterfront where we had gone on our first date in DC and there were a ton of people there because it was such a nice day. We’re both pretty private people so I thought oh no, what if he proposes in front of all these people! But he led me down to the park and over to a little flower garden that was protected by some evergreens. That was where he got down on one knee and proposed! I said “yes, of course” and took the ring and gave him a big hug and that’s when I started to cry. When I let go of him I handed him back the ring and he put it on my finger and it fit perfectly. I was so so so happy and I don’t think we stopped smiling for a week.
He had several other meaningful activities planned for the rest of the night and it was just so amazing. Plus, we saw each other the very next weekend in Napa where we met up with the same two sets of friends whose weddings brought us together! It was great to celebrate with them.
And now for the ring. He ended up getting sort of a combination of my two favorites. It’s the Memoire ring I liked but with a thinner band more like the Ritani. I don’t know many of the stats because the info is in CA, but he said the stone is AGS 0 Ideal cut (he did that all on his own – I didn’t bestow any of my Pricescope knowledge on him!) and the center stone is 2.42 carats.
If you got through that whole story you''re a trooper! Thanks for reading!
