Hi Everyone,
I am a newbie, this is my first time posting and I wanted to ask for people's thoughts. I would like to have a ring made and have been reading reviews for stone merchants/gemcutters. I have been looking at the Imperial Malayan Garnet that is on Precision Gems website, but can't figure out how to post a picture. I emailed yesterday and Gene was good enough to get back to me quickly with the following: (I'll bullet the information)

The photo is accurate under incandescent light (I have looked at the stone on 3 different computers and the stone color seems the same)
The stone will turn more of a brown color under CFL lighting
In daylight the color is more of a mauve color.
The stone has some very fine silk
It will fit a standard 8mm mounting for a square cushion stone or a 4 prong setting.

I really like the color, but forgot to ask about the sparkle factor. It looks like it will sparkle:) Are there any other questions I should ask?

Thank you:)

I like it! Gene gave it a 5/5 for brilliance so I'm sure it'll be sparkly! Red garnets can be shifty so as long as you think you'll be happy with the various colour ways described I think it's worth seeing in person. Also, worth considering the type of lighting you're mainly in and therefore what the stone will look like for you - for instance I work in an office so it's important to me that my stones look good in fluorescent light.

Gem 1635 - Imperial Malaya Garnet
2.610 ct. This is one of my favorite square cushion designs for garnets. It's called a "French Button". The stone measures 7.927 mm. There is some very fine silk in the stone, that can only be seen with a loupe. The color in most lighting is a red with a slight orange/pink. These stones do shift a bit, going more red in incandescent, and peach in those CFL bulbs.

Color: 9/10 Clarity:9/10 Brilliance: 5/5 TQR: 9.3

I see that Gene mentioned some fine silk. It could be that the stone may not be sparkly but end up more of the glowy variety because silk disperses/reflects light differently. The checkerboard cut should allow it to flash well when light hits them just right. If you spend a lot of time under fluorescent lights, make sure you are all right with the brown colour that the stone shows.

Hi Ricezo and Chrono,
Thank you both for your responses and brought up some good points I hadn't thought about. I am under flourescent light at work everyday and do want something that sparkles. I would be really disappointed if the stone went to a murky brown/dull and will ask Gene if he can send me some other pictures under flourescent light/ outside. Maybe I will get to see if it glows or sparkles. Thank you for the referral to the other stone - it is really pretty.

Thanks Again:)

Happy decision making!
I love the color as shown in the vendor pic by Gene. I agree with the comments given: you need to investigate what it looks like in the light you are mostly in.

My IMG (see pic to the left) also goes from the pretty melon color in that picture to a sort of copper color in TFL lighting. I will see if I can get a picture of it tomorrow and post for you.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you for the comments! I emailed Gene and requested some pictures under different lighting.
I also asked if the stone glows and/or sparkles. Hope to hear back in the next couple of days:)
JoCoJenn,
It is really kind of you to take pictures of your stone. I look forward to seeing it. A copper color sound pretty.

I'll let you all know what I find out!

Here are two I just took. Naturally, I cannot say the one you're looking at will produce the same variation in color, but at least you have an idea of the IMG color shift. ;)

If you don't like brown, then you shouldn't get a malaya. Brown, in of itself, is a murky color, as I never saw a "bright" or "vibrant" brown.

Hi TL,
Thank you for the information! Gene was able to send me some pictures in different lighting. I'm going to think about it for a few days:)

Au contraire... long ago I discovered baby poo brown to be quite bright and vibrant. :wink2:
