The talks about increasing price in good colour Mahenge Spinel got me looking at pink red spinels, and would like the experts' opinions on inclusion vs colour.

I personally do not mind inclusions as long as the colour pops at me, as evidence in the 3 raspberry rubies that I have:

I also has a sizeable silky Chatham ruby heart with the raspberry colour that I love, and shall have it re-cut one day as I do not like its current chequer board cut.

I have found pink red Mahenge spinels with colour that I like, and decent sizes for a ring, with prices within my reach, however, they are listed as "included" and the inclusions are visible in the pics that I can see.

My question to the experts is that, how low a clarity would you go for a red or pink red spinel for you please?

Thanks for your help and advice in advance.

Hi DK,

I would personally prefer an eye clean stone. Generally, I am fine with inclusions as long as they are not feathers and are not surface reaching.

I am not an expert but I am more willing to accept light inclusions in larger spinels as long as they do not affect beauty or durability. Rarity is also a factor. Mahenge spinels are getting scarce, so a lightly included Mahenge spinel may be an excellent choice as long as the spinel is bright and lively. Also, not all inclusions are equal. For example, itsy bitsy crystal, or mineral inclusions I do not mind, but I do not prefer stones with feather inclusions.

Spinels are typically very clean, compared to ruby, hence the standard for spinel is eye clean, whereas some silk in ruby is acceptable.

May need to save up for a cleaner stone then.

Thanks everyone for your advice.
