Hi lovely people,
I wanted to put the little journey of my sapphire in one place Instead of five threads with me asking questions about it - and with the idea it may help someone else in a similar position in the future.

I wanted to express my gratitude and appreciation to the people that helped me here. If I hadn’t of found this forum - the stone would still be sitting in a box forgotten about.

So - I inherited a sapphire pendant that used to be my grandmothers on my fathers side of the family.
Unfortunately both of his parents passed away when he was young and then he in turn passed away when I was 19 which was when my mother gave me the pendant.
She didn’t know anything about it other then it was a sapphire but was old and *floored* (as she put it) and was only worth sentimental value.
I used to wear it on and off - (The vintage silver necklace would turn black on me although the setting never did).
People would comment on it and ask me if it was real and I would say *I think it is*dismissively.... as it really didn’t matter too much to me. All that mattered is I had something really special from my dad. (Boy do I miss him!)
One time when I was wearing it the jump loop broke and the stone in the bottom half the setting fell off .... I only noticed because I stood on it, breaking the prongs and feeing the stone from the setting completely.

Very relieved I didn’t lose the stone I put it in a jewellery box to be fixed in the future (I am really bad at getting around to ever fixing anything).
During this time my mother passed away (I note this because it means I have no one to ask about where this stone may have come from).
I noticed when it came out that It was *big* - bigger then any gem stone I had seen in person.
Still assuming it was *floored* and *pretty worthless*.... I came across this forum and asked these wonderful people what they thought I was looking at.

They gave me wonderful advice of where to take it to and what to do next. So kind with their knowledge and happy to help.
**Also correct in their assesment from the photos that it is a real sapphire and most likely unheated!!

Having taken it to the Lab I have its report and its a lovely old Ceylon sapphire weighing in at 8.63cts.
She has lovely clarity and sparkle with some pretty heavy colour zoning but as she is light-medium there is no dark zones and she glows amazingly in the sunlight.

Not only do I now have a gorgeous incredibly special stone, I have also learnt so so so much about sapphires, diamonds and other gem stones from the wonderful people here.... and am still going everyday learning a little more.

The only updates left to do now is when she gets her new setting and a valuation so I can get her out of that box and into the light.

Glad you came back, did you decide whether to re-cut & polish or not?

Glad you came back, did you decide whether to re-cut & polish or not?

I took it to the gem cutter who said he wouldn’t want to recut it - mainly because with colour zoning he would risk cutting out the colour in the bottom and therefore not helping the colour at all... it’s a tricky stone - he also said it was well cut in the first place and had held up very well for its age.
He said he could polish the table only (and maybe a couple of the nips on the sides) - for $300 + as the table has split facets... there are just so many of them - it was a big job that he wasn’t 100% sure was necessary as some buyers like the stone to show it’s age.
He advised me to get the report and if I sold it the buyer could clean it up before setting or if the jeweller I chose to haveit set with advised it should be re-polished he would do the work minus the consultation fee I paid him. Which was good.
He gave me a rock bottom trade *value* by saying don’t sell it for less the $10,000 - but I handn’t has the report done yet so he was assuming *heated*.

I just went to contact my jeweller who made my ER in antique style with an H&A (G VVSI) 16yrs ago but google says he is Permanently Closed. It occurred to me he would be pretty old now and probably retired.
(Sigh) - now I have to find a new local jeweller that I trust.
Not easy.
I have been looking at settings online -can’t find anything similar or even that I really like .... but did come across some empty ones and was wondering if that was an easier way to go or more difficult as I have to match the size of the stone.

I can have the original one copied in white gold but it hides the depth of the stone (which maybe better for colour presentation - I don’t know!) - need expert advice - as always - lol

So happy for you @Beautiful-disaster to have excellent resolution and documentation finally about exactly what your beautiful stone is!
It must be a relief to now be armed with this information. There are so many things I love about your stone- the shape, the color and the sparkle especially!! Oh and of course the size and cut!! The sentimental value is priceless!
Whatever you do from here, you can do from a position of full understanding of just what a special treasure you’ve inherited.

I wish there was a *love* option for this post - but I will just have to settle for *liking* it - but I LIKE it a lot! Thanks so much for all your help and support along the way Bluemuse.

It’s been a fun journey along with you.
I love it especially when new people, like you, wander rather lost and alone into Pricescope and then become enthused and delighted about the treasure that they had questions about.
Of course it’s fantastic that your beautiful sapphire is natural, unheated and from Ceylon but better still is the journey that has enabled you to appreciate how wonderful and special your inherited piece of jewellery is.
Can’t wait to see her in her new setting and I know you will have many many years of enjoyment wearing and loving her.
And btw, she needs a name, maybe Legacy?

Love the story of this beautiful stone! Please let us know how you decided to set it.

Edited. Sorry, while I was typing, you posted much more info on what you are planning to do. Good luck to you!

You’re very welcome! Been cheering you on from the sidelines! Hope you can take your time deciding how to proceed next.
I’m glad the cutter advised against a recut.
I would hate for the stone to loose any bit of its special character and history.
Good luck moving forward!

@Bron357 - What a wonderful suggestion! You have been the most incredible help throughout this process. All of your advice has been spot on and very appreciated. Unbelievably helpful to find someone locally in Sydney with your acquired knowledge. - Priceless honestly.
Thankyou so much.
I think Legacy is a wonderful name (especially considering my father had two daughters so his name will die out with us). Xx

Thank you @Beautiful-disaster it has been a pleasure helping you along the way.
And while your fathers “name” might disappear, his legacy both in his genes and his mothers exquisite sapphire will live on and on and that’s what really matters.

It's a beautiful stone I hope that you end up keeping it and not selling it because for sentimental value alone you cannot replace it!!!

I agree - it’s irreplaceable - and to be honest looking at what they sell for it’s worth more to me then it would be to anyone else.
I do have a *thing* for treasure.(Doesn’t everybody?) - and to me this really qualifies as finding a *lost treasure*.

Amazing story and an amzing stone. It has clear color zoning and I always think the color zoned stones has more character to it than evenly saturated ones. I agree with the appraiser that better not to recut and keep it in its original form. Definitely worth more than $10k for its sheer carat weight alone.

Thanks Lahiru. I always appreciate someones opinion that is in the trade.
I really love that the people here can appreciate it - even though it’s far from the perfect ideal. I find it hard to talk about with anyone else in case they see it as showing off or humble bragging.

Thanks for the update. I love happy endings (or endings of beginnings cause now you get to design a setting!)
