Hi lovely people,
I wanted to put the little journey of my sapphire in one place Instead of five threads with me asking questions about it - and with the idea it may help someone else in a similar position in the future.
I wanted to express my gratitude and appreciation to the people that helped me here. If I hadn’t of found this forum - the stone would still be sitting in a box forgotten about.
So - I inherited a sapphire pendant that used to be my grandmothers on my fathers side of the family.
Unfortunately both of his parents passed away when he was young and then he in turn passed away when I was 19 which was when my mother gave me the pendant.
She didn’t know anything about it other then it was a sapphire but was old and *floored* (as she put it) and was only worth sentimental value.
I used to wear it on and off - (The vintage silver necklace would turn black on me although the setting never did).
People would comment on it and ask me if it was real and I would say *I think it is*dismissively.... as it really didn’t matter too much to me. All that mattered is I had something really special from my dad. (Boy do I miss him!)
One time when I was wearing it the jump loop broke and the stone in the bottom half the setting fell off .... I only noticed because I stood on it, breaking the prongs and feeing the stone from the setting completely.
Very relieved I didn’t lose the stone I put it in a jewellery box to be fixed in the future (I am really bad at getting around to ever fixing anything).
During this time my mother passed away (I note this because it means I have no one to ask about where this stone may have come from).
I noticed when it came out that It was *big* - bigger then any gem stone I had seen in person.
Still assuming it was *floored* and *pretty worthless*.... I came across this forum and asked these wonderful people what they thought I was looking at.
They gave me wonderful advice of where to take it to and what to do next. So kind with their knowledge and happy to help.
**Also correct in their assesment from the photos that it is a real sapphire and most likely unheated!!
Having taken it to the Lab I have its report and its a lovely old Ceylon sapphire weighing in at 8.63cts.
She has lovely clarity and sparkle with some pretty heavy colour zoning but as she is light-medium there is no dark zones and she glows amazingly in the sunlight.
Not only do I now have a gorgeous incredibly special stone, I have also learnt so so so much about sapphires, diamonds and other gem stones from the wonderful people here.... and am still going everyday learning a little more.
The only updates left to do now is when she gets her new setting and a valuation so I can get her out of that box and into the light.
