Everything you mention (except pet) plus - short/long term disability, dental and vision insurances.

My guess (ball park) is that all this costs our family household about $9000 per year. With Health insurance being more than half of that.

Lots of money, especially the health insurance, but I sleep better at night knowing I am fortunate to have good coverage and can afford it for my family.

Are you kidding? Hubby and I were just talking about whether we should insure our watches (just Tags, around $4k total) and saying, why should we pay an extra x amount of dollars plus what we pay for my ring per year, plus my car insurance (he drives a company car, so thankfully we don''t have to worry about his.) But then there is homeowners, etc. When does it end? Never, right?

Hmmm... is this the wrong time to mention that I work for a health insurance company...

You''re right about the cost DF, but it might be advisable to add a personal liablity umbrella policy as well! They are not that expensive for even a million dollars in coverage, and they pick up liability above your home, auto, etc. Very useful if you have significant assets to protect, especially if you have teen drivers.

That sounds about right. I guess everything is relative. $400 is not chump change, but compared to $10-15,000 for health insurance, $2,000+ for car insurance, thousands for homeowners and life/disability insurance, etc., the amount of coverage is much less per dollar because it only kicks in when the primary is exhausted. It only makes sense if you have substantial assets (like diamonds

) to protect.
