I have my new computer; and have noted some interesting things.
First was the suggestion yesturday at work that I should shake my old computer hard - and it might work. I shook it - and it did. Now I have both computers. However, can I depend on a computer that I must shake to start? I think updating to the new on was the right choice.
The most frustrating thing about the new one is the fact that I could not read my data CD''s from the old one. The computer would pop up a message saying that a CD had been inserted that needed a UDF reader, and that it was loading a UDF reader (with reboot required). Then after reboot the computer would pop up a message that the UDF reader it just self loaded from itself would make Windows unstable and that the computer had blocked the reader from functioning. It suggested a website for the "latest" reader - and the link did not work.
I figured that I should just plug in my old CD reader/Writer (I had a stand alone CD writer for my previous laptop - I don''t think integral writers were even available when I purchased it). I downloaded the appropriate Windows XP driver version from HP, and discovered that I again needed a UDF reader... only to repeat the process. Only now the computer had disabled the CD writer. So I had to figure out how to "re-enable" the CED writer and re-import the drivers for it. Then, Finally, I did a search on the internet for "Adaptec UDF Reader" (the full name) and got a download that allowed me to read my backup and data CD''s from my previous computer. 3 hours just to read what was a very common compressed CD format for many years...
Anyway, with a few more hours work I did get my email files (and file structure) imported and my address book (I had to do things the hard way as the computer did not "recognize" them while on the CD; but if I copied them from the CD to the hard drive - the computer recognized the files). Then I got email set-up and could recover several weeks of email to my computer.
I sure hope my other data recovery goes better. Anyway; for now back to bed. I have weeks of missed sleep to make up for.
Anyone else have any great stories of transfering old data to a new computer - or other interesting startup problems?
