Iolite Sunstone - which will you choose?

I am considering some iolite sunstones and would really appreciate your opinion. These are the only pics I currently have...

Oval 6.00ct 11.7x14.9mm (1.27 ratio)


Emerald 5.38ct 8.9x15.6mm (1.75)


The other selections that don’t call to me as much as the two above but putting them here cos maybe I’m missing something

Planning to set as a ring so that I can admire the cute confetti heh.

I like the first, second, and 5th options. But if you are most drawn to 1 and 2 I would ask the vendor which one has the strongest and most noticeable schiller, since that's what makes these stones so amazing. From my experience, this vendor is very familiar with sunstone iolite and happy to answer questions.

I feel like the 5th stone is too long so from a proportions perspective I prefer 1 or 2. I like the size and color of 3 most to be honest but the schiller isn’t so nice.

@icy_jade I totally understand! Sunstone iolite is hard that way, because on the one hand the purple/blue hue of iolite is obviously more appealing than the black. But on the other hand, the schiller is what makes the stone so amazing. If I were you, I'd focus on the schiller above everything else (except size, obviously, since you can't make a stone work as a ring if it's too big on your hand or out of your comfort zone).

It's hard for me to figure out whether 1 or 2 is better in terms of schiller, but definitely 5 looks too long once I saw the "mock up". I think the angle of the photo makes 2 look better, so it's hard to compare them since they were taken from different angles.

1 is the best size with the best sparkly bits. I vote 1

Ok oval spoke to me more so 1 is my final choice heh. Plus I got a few other emerald shaped stones recently so I think I should get an oval for variety.

Yeah it is 1! Excited to see it in real life. No idea how to set it though. Probably something simple since it’s already quite substantial. It’s from The Gem Trader so if anyone is keen on the others please reach out to Brad. I honestly think 2 is lovely and could have been my choice if I didn’t already buy two other rectangular stones recently. 5 makes a lovely horizontal bar pendant necklace I think?

Oh pls do get it. It’s such a pretty stone. Less than $100 too so not at all pricey.
