My question is the same as my thread title. I was looking at some “fun” jewelry on Novica and was just wondering if the jade was naturally black or dyed.

I had not heard of dyed South American black jade a few years ago.... Guatamala produces lovely black jadeite jade, which has been very affordable . The SA jadeite was only rediscovered in the last 100 years after most of the sources were obscured by time, erosion and closely guarded secrets. The Chinese started to purchase it where it was cut and sold, sometimes as Burmese. I have no idea whether some are now dying it though.

Thank you Bluegemz! I’m glad you responded. You know so much about jade.

I would assume any opaque to semi translucent stone has the ability to be dyed, coated, irraduated, filled or otherwise, so if unsure, get a lab report.
