Is This A Men’s Ring?

I had an interesting conversation with Ivy and Rose today. They said they could custom make me a platinum filigree setting for $1200-$1400. They have several lovely diamonds on their site for $5000-$6000. Many are old diamonds. I'll have to see examples of their filigree work. I guess I'm considering it.... This is the only way I get platinum. Oh and I can also get square diamonds if I like. Radiant, asscher etc Plus I can go to their store in chicago and see all these different types of diamonds. I've only ever seen round....

I've worked with ivy and rose and I like them. They definitely have a nice collection of vintage diamonds to choose from!

I love the top ring. TBH, you might not need a huge stone if the diamond is lively enough. I’ve often seen stunning small diamonds! The price point and heft of that ring is suitable. Maybe buy and try on if the ring is returnable?

Ivy and Rose is a great option. They do custom and are nice jewelers. There’s a thread around showing settings bought from them, I will try to find.

Searching for Ivy and Rose, I see one PSer has bought a LAB OEC from them which I think could be really nice!

I'm talking to a guy on instagram that does custom filigree rings. Nicest guy, I was getting pretty excited. I showed him some of the things I liked. It was going really well

So then I told him TRR ring was $7600. He was like WHAT! And pretty much told me to go buy it! Everyone says the same thing. Probably when we finally go buy this ring it will be gone! It's just so expensive and I'm terrified of it.

I've had this ring saved in my favorites on TRR for weeks! I love it!
As the others have said here, their return policy is easy, I've used it myself several times, and I also purchased a couple of items that I kept.

Oh, I'm afraid I can't help you with your questions as I am not anywhere near as knowledgeable about diamonds and settings as the others who have provided you some feedback on this ring already. I just think the ring is very cool, I love the engraved patterns on the sides, and the diamond seems to be nice enough and plenty big for the price to warrant seeing in person! The warm color doesn't bother me and I like the faceting pattern. Inclusions don't really bother me, especially on old cuts.
I mainly saved it as inspiration for a ring I'd like to have custom made for my husband some day. But he wants something with a garnet or ruby, not diamond.
I actually tried to talk myself into buying it for myself as it is a size 8, my size! But in the end I decided it was more of a man's ring :)
 
I don’t think you’ve mentioned what size ring you’re looking for? Bear in mind that some rings are more sizeable than others.

I don’t think you’re going find many vintage rings in this thread, but it does show that men’s rings come in a wide variety of styles:

We just ordered it! We spent the evening looking at loose european cuts and we really couldn't find anything this size, this quality, near this price. Most of them were nearly $7k loose.

Excited to get it here!! I guess I'll take it to a local Jewler to confirm everything is real. Then I have to get is size and appraised. Is there somewhere you trust to send antique rings for appraisal? Maybe they'll size it too?
 
Hey guys can you help me pick a gadget to measure the diamond with? Should I get a gem gauge, like the ones that fan out? Or a micrometer? Can a micrometer measure the depth of the diamond in the setting? Is there a micrometer that's better for measuring diamond in a setting?

If for some reason it’s not what you were hoping for and you do decide to return it, be sure you talk to someone at TRR and get a return label that’s fully insured for your purchase amount.

I’m not sure who to send it to for an appraisal, but David Klass might know and he could size it for you, and rhodium plate it, if you decide you still prefer the white metal look. He can also refresh engraving if that’s something you ever decided you wanted to do, although it looks great to me as is!


I have these calipers and I like them because they are made of a plastic type material instead of metal, so if they slip I don’t need to worry about scratching my softer gems. I don’t think you’ll be able to measure the depth of a set stones with these.

I’m very excited for you both! Yeah!!

IMO it’s a real antique made in the early 1930s (I say this because of the style and the engraving of wheat sheaves), diamond cut around that time. If you zoom in, IMO, diamond looks original to the ring, it fits the setting perfectly, and it doesn’t look like it’s ever been taken out of the prongs. I would never do that either but YMMV.

Yes, I think it’s a great price too.

Your local jeweler will be able to measure your diamond. Measure diameter in a couple places and depth if you can. You can calculate rough weight from those dimensions. Examine the girdle.

Have the jeweler assess why the diamond is an SI2-I1. Crack, inclusions, chip? Does the grade setting inclusion pose a stability hazard? I don’t think the mystery inclusion/s does pose a risk, especially in a sunken setting like that but you should ask that question. Most of us in the antique diamond camp don’t care about most inclusions in antique stones. YMMV.

Don’t take the diamond out of the setting unless you can easily reset it (RealReal doesn’t allow alterations for a return). Use an experienced jeweler, ALWAYS.

I think it can be sized but you MUST send it to an excellent, experienced jeweler for resizing. We can help you connect with the jeweler tasked with that, if you decide to keep the ring. That excellent jeweler will have a laser welder that doesn’t use solder and can clean up any existing solder from prior resizing. About sizing, my ring size went up a whole size in ten years even though I lost a lot of weight. Wider shanks or rings you want to stack with other rings might require larger sizes versus thin shanks or solo rings. I’m not sure what to tell you about not having rings too tight or too loose (I’m always in that camp) but my preference is too loose with a silicone guard **always** on. Just quirky me though.

Appraising, if it’s for insurance purposes, fine. If it’s just to tell you what you are looking at (is it a real, antique) most of us could assess that with close ups. I wonder if your insurance would take the minimal RR Valuation report as evidence for insurance. This recommendation from me for omission of an appraisal is to save you money, and TBH I think appraisers aren’t always competent in antiques, but others might feel you need an appraisal.
