Hi there, my quest for a CC sapphire is almost over, now is the looong.. wait for it to arrive:) My new quest is to look for a apple green Peridot which is my birthstone. I am looking at a cushion cut or any shape that do not have a pointy edge as I am afraid of chipping the rather soft stone. Around 2-3 carats, priced around $150. Eyeclean, Untreated. Is that too tall an order? Please advise? Recoommendation most welcome! Thank in advance! I have one here, what do you think?Peridot

I like concave cut! There is a yellow tint is it desirable? Peridot 2

You should be able to get eye clean, untreated peridots of that size easily within budget. Peridots are typically untreated as well. I like Gary Dutton''s stones as well. Contact him to see what he has available: www.diamondexpert.com

Nice cutting on that stone. Yellow isn''t a desirable colour in peridots but do buy what you like.

how about this one? john is SO nice.

Color is subjective. I personally don''t mind a little yellow in peridot and do not really like those that are more minty/blueish.Other folks here certainly have a differing opinion.

There''s no right or wrong, its got to be about what you really like. I like a lot of non ideal colors which allow me to get really nice stones for fantastic prices

that said, I like the 2nd stone more than the first. The cut+color draw me to it. The first one has an ok color (looks blueish to me) but does not have the appealing cut of the 2nd.

LOVE the color. :) and his cuts are great! i LOVE the garnet i have from him.

Hi there, thanks for the replies:)

What do you think of this? Its BIG

peridot3

In a way colored stones are all about the color. But color is very subjective. What I like you might not!

The last stone you posted looks too olive colored for Peridot lovers. But email Dana and ask about it apparently his photos don''t always match the stone. And if it is olive but you wear alot of Orange or Olive clothing it would be striking!

Anyway I think all the ones you''ve posted would work for a ring. It''s a matter of color. Which is your call!!

Depends if you''re after a particular shade of color, or you''d like to buy what''s considered the best by the market. If it''s the later, I like concave cut one the best, as it''s got the brightest color with no brown tones. Yellowish color is typical of peridot, and those that have very little of it, fall into maybe a few percent of the stones. I''d try to find a stone that has very little of either yellow or blue undertones, and that''s as pure apple green as possible.

I do like the concave from art cut (peridot2)most! However it does not come with a cert, is it a reliable source? What ''clever'' question should I ask? I But ma re, its stated as ''bright yellowish green'' so there is a yellow tone? For this peridot, I would like to buy one that is ''considered best in the market''. Rick Martin has replied, he said that this is a first-rate gem?

Chic,
Low value items like peridots, citrines and the like usually do not come with certification because it’s just not worth it in a cost value analysis. A brief is already $25 and when you add the shipping and etc, it just doesn’t make much sense because the vendor then has to raise the price of the stone, which will make it even harder to sell. What’s more, these stones have no known treatment; therefore, there is really nothing to proof. Rick is a trustworth vendor who has earned a good reputation here on PS. I do see a yellow undertone but at least it doesn’t show an olive colour. If you want something that is the best in the market, it will be a pure bright light green stone with absolutely no yellow. It will also cost far more than $200.

Here's a picture of a top quality peridot which I don't think any of us will be able to find. Something like this will cost well over $500 per ct. I thought the article linked below might be of interest in terms of a generic buying guide. I have heard that the Suppatt find in Pakistan is lovely and among the nicest mined today so you may wish to persue that.

This first peridot is a nice example from the Supat mine although the tone is rather light. It is, however, a very bright green with very little yellow undertone.

This second example, if I’m not mistaken, is also from the Pakistani Supat mine. A nice green with very little yellow. BTW, these stones are all sold.

PER002.jpg

This last peridot example shows a strongly coloured peridot, whose origin I don’t know, but it shows more of a yellowish undertone.

PER001.jpg

Don''t know if this will help, but if you''d like a really nice example of peridot, you should try to find one that looks like a lightly colored tsavorite - that''s the color you should be after. Of course, it shouldn''t be pale, but more like medium-light. Setting it in white metal (and possibly diamonds) should further bring out the green color.

Of the 3 you posted, I like the concave cut. Someone else on PS has a concave cut peridot, and it really stands out.

Thanks everyone, now I have a better idea on what to go for:)

I am unfamiliar with the vendor. The first that I''d do is check the return policy and research for feedback. The stone looks decent so it''s worth asking for additional pictures on the back of the hand.

Tks Chrono, the seller has 30 days return policy (buyer pays return postage) I had just check out PS, he has a rather good reputation.I understand that Peridot is not an expensive stone, hence certification is most often not included. May I know what are the possible treatment?

I''m not too worried about treatment. As with all coloured gemstone, colour is KING. Sometimes, it can be difficult to take accurate pictures of gemstones so if it turns out to look different that the picture, it''s good to have a generous return period plus a vendor who is honest and trustworthy enough to refund the full amount.

That last one looks nice too.

hi ma re I think so too! Had requested for more info from the seller, keep you guys update!

I was browsing Gene''s blog at Precision Gem and this peridot is one of his upcoming stones. It''s not listed on the regular website, but he just posted it to his blog today so I would contact him if you''re interested in it.

Is this the one you contacted the vendor about? I am very partial to round stones. And this one looks very nice to me. Good Luck!!

Thanks stonehunter and austennut

here are the info

Peridot - 1.88 ct. This is modified SRB design that I changed up to provide some more sparkle from this Peridot from Pakistan. The stone is very bright with a clean apple green color. Measures 7.92 mm so it will fit nicely into a standard 8 mm mounting.

Color: 8
Clarity: 8
Brilliance: 5

Total Quality Rating: 8.7

But why is the brilliance only 5? is it over a scale of 10? It does not seem like a very "fine" quality rating, does it?

Which will you prefer the concave cushion peridot(peridot2) of this one? reason being? thanks in advance!
